iPhone 3G upgrade - Help
Hi Folks,
I am slightly behind in technology but I have an iphone 3G which I have never updated (software version 2.0 and serial number starting 8883xxxxx I have been prompted several times to update but I have declined. What do I need to do to get the most recent stuff i.e. iOS4.2. or whatever you recommend. I have seen a lot of “don’t, if you have not”, I really don’t know where to start from but the phone is becoming useless e.g. I can’t open SMS, battery life is low etc. I am using the phone outside the USA

Definitely go to at least iOS 3.0 (as a first step) and then carefully go to 3.1.3 - you should not notice any real performance drop with the iOS 3.x series compared to iOS 2.0
There is no way to go back to iOS 2.x once you go to iOS 3.0
However you if you have access to a Mac, you can try iOS 4.2.1 safely and if you are careful you can still keep the ability to downgrade back to iOS 3.x
iOS 4.0 through to iOS 4.1 aren't very fast on the 3G, so I would recommend you don't even try to use these.
Most app store apps are still supported on iOS 3.1.3
