    Default iPhone 3G + Pwnage 3.1 Help & Clarifications

Hi everyone, me with my girlfriend have got 2 iPhone 3G with 3.0.1 firm version carrier locked to AT&T (but we haven't got AT&T sim).
We have our phones jailbroken and ultrasn0w installed and working properly.
I always follow everything I find on the internet about this world and I know the risks about upgrading to 3.1 my our phones.
Anyway when Pwnage 3.1 was released I've read all around that this can be used to upgrade to 3.1 without upgrading the baseband firmware and have the iPhone jailbroken.
Now it comes to two options:

    1. I didn't understand a thing about jailbreaks, unlocks, etc.
    2. Things are confused around this.

What I say is that I've download the original 3.1 firm, I've loaded it in Pwnage 3.1, made my custom firmware, put inside the iphone with iTunes (overcoming the 16xx errors).. It loads like a charm but I always get the emergency screen.

And the only way for me to come out of this thing is to downgrade to 3.0.1 that again turns the iphone to emergency screen but this time I can get rid of it with redsn0w 0.8 (not working with 3.1).

Guys, I've done it about 4 or 5 times (including recustomizing the firm), followed all the guides I've found all around..

Wasn't the "jailbreak" supposed to get rid of the emergency screen ? And isn't Pwnage 3.1 supposed to create a Jailbroken image ?

Again, I've got two 3g (not S) iphones and I'm pretty sure I followed finely the instructions about making the custom firmware with Pwnage (in fact after I put the 3.1 and downgrade to 3.0.1 again I've still got 4.x baseband firm version so this give me the confirmation I've previously loaded a custom firm in the phone).

    I've used Mac and Windows

Please, help me understanding what's goin on here and if there is a way to have an iPhone 3G carrier-locked, upgraded to 3.1 with the old baseband but working...

Thanks in advance to everyone for the attention..

    Default

When creating your custom firmware (ipsw), make sure activation is selected.

Activation means "hacktivate" without using AT&T SIM which will get you past the emergency slider.

Jailbreak means gaining access to root file system, hack it, so you can put unsigned apps on it.

Unlock means unlocking the baseband by installing/using ultrasn0w via Cydia.
