What is your modem firmware: this is in Settings->General->About

currently phone is in a friend trying to sort it out for me..but what difference will the firmware cause? i heard it will be a problem if it's updated on OS3.1.3.

Yes that can be one cause of problems, there can be others. You have given very few details - which makes it next to impossible to solve this for you.

Based on that modem firmware, there is no unlock for you right now. This indicates that the phone had been updated to OS 3.1.3 and then downgraded to 3.1.2

The advice has always been, if you rely on unofficial unlock then don't let your iPhone be updated by iTunes at all. Only update your phone when you know that the OS update (and associated baseband update) can be supported by the latest jailbreaking and unlocking tools.

Wait till after the next iPhone is released - an unlock will probably released for the 3G and 3GS after the next iPhone finally arrives.

This topic has been discussed and answered many times already. The advice to 3G iPhone owners has been unchanged since the 3G was first released with OS 2.0 - avoid updaing your iPhone OS if you rely on unofficial unlock until you know the update is safe for the unlock.
