Just an update. Yesterday I got sick enough of my iphone not being able to log into wifi networks. I opened it up and heated the wifi chip with a fairly unsophisticated soldering iron. I know that every engineer will tell me now that you cannot and you should not try to work on BGA mounted components on a logic board, in particular, people concerned with process control.
Here just quickly my story. I bought this iphone about six weeks ago through ebay. It was a refurbished iphone 3g 8GB in pristine condition. After jailbraking and unlocking it with ultrasn0w it worked perfectly. Just this week it stopped being able to log into wifi networks but it was still able to see them. After searching the Internet a lot I found some comments that reheating the wifi chip might fix it. Well, there were tons of other proposed fixes and nothing worked in my case. Yesterday I opened the phone up according to instructions found in youtube. The only trouble here was opening the EMF shielding but this worked as well with investing some efforts. The wifi chip is very small and I decided to use my simple Weller 25 W soldering iron. I put some solder on the tip to have some better heat conductivity. After pressing the iron tip on the chip just after a few seconds it felt like the chip moved a little bit closer to the board. I heated some more seconds and reassembled the phone. Since then my wifi works perfectly. At this point I am not claiming that reheating the chip fixed it since perhaps just disconnecting the battery might have an effect on its own. If it keeps working or other people make the same observation the conclusion might be that reheating the wifi chip can fix it. Anyhow, if somebody tries to do the same you do it on your own risk.
It is definitely possible that some of the problems are hardware related. Dry solder joints can cause delayed failures in electronics, these are often easily fixed by re-heating and re-flowing the solder around the joints.
The strange thing about the wifi problems, is that there seems to not be one single root cause. Some find the problem only happens after using ultrasn0w. Others have never unlocked and still have the problem.
Possibly there is more than one wifi problem but it is being reported as a single problem because the symptoms are the same.

Please search and post in the correct section next time. Your problem is with a 3G iPhone and is completely unrelated to the 2G wifi problems. I have moved it to a thread which is more appropriate.
There is no quick fix or youtube guide for this problem. It is an apple bug that is made worse by using blacksn0w. It is up to apple to fix it.
Read this thread for information on fuzzyband, which if you are lucky is your ONLY possible option for fixing this problem aside from waiting for Apple to maybe release a fix.
