Iphone 2g want to upgrade to 3.1.2
hi need some help
firmware 2.2 (5G77)
there are so many links on google on how i can upgrade/jailbreak/unlock my phone and am confused as to which one to believe
i've been reading this Unlock iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blacksn0w | Redmond Pie
but can't figure out if im supposed to upgrade my firmware via itunes. i did download custom 3.1.2 file but cant figure out how to restore to it as itunes won't give me the option to select this file
any and all help are greatly appreciated
If you read the first paragraph of your link fully, you'll see that blacksn0w is meant for 3g iphones. So don't use that one.
What is your operating system, Windows or Mac?
What is your itunes version?
Your iTunes version has to correspond with the firmware you want to use. So to restore the new firmware 3.1.2 will not work with an old iTunes version.
I would recommend you update your iTunes software to the most recent one. Then shift+restore to Apple's official firmware 3.0 or 3.0.1 (can be found here). Holding the shift (alt-options on a Mac) button when you click restore will give you the option to select the firmware file.
If you have a Mac you should use the latest PwnageTool. With a Windows PC jailbreak and unlock in one procedure with redsn0w. Now that you know which FW and software to use, go and find yourself a good tutorial, there are tons out there (e.g. this one).
You could instead use blackra1n to jailbreak firmware 3.1.2. But to unlock it you would then have to install bootneuter in a separate step. I've read in the linked article some users had issues after using blackra1n, so I would just use 3.0 or 3.0.1 for now with the safe redsn0w procedure.
Once you're unlocked you can shift+restore to a custom 3.1.2, but if I were you I would wait for that until you are knowledgeable enough to know exactly what to do and which customized firmware you want (keyword: activated or not, updated baseband or not).
Finally, from what I've read in various places, it's advisable to set up your iphone as new, i.e. do not restore from an old backup once you have upgraded your firmware. Otherwise you'll get introduced into the world of 16xx errors, it's no fun...
P.S: Read multiple tutorials and forum posts before you do this. My instructions here are just an overview and not guaranteed to work. I'm a noob myself and have spent the last few days online to find answers. Take your time, be patient and you won't run into problems (like I did). Google is there for you.
P.S.: Please delete your duplicate thread.
