Jim, all they really have to do is look at the device id on usb or the bluetooth address. Because they know which models use what id and what hardware was used for the devices it wouldn't be difficult at all. Not saying thats what they did but I don't think it can be discounted that a driver installed on the client machine would be able to know when a device isn't supported for tethering. For that matter the same method could be implored in the misd deamon without trying to go down the sticky road of detecting a 3G connection.

We simply have to wait for someone who analyzes misd and devises the right patch.
I agree on this. Remember when at firmware 2 on the iPhone 3g in Egypt no GPS was enabled (used to be a local law, no longer in effekt). We found locationd to be the one and after a while a patch came up that solved the problem. I am with you on your theory about inserting a check - like they did in locationd.

This thread is about getting tethering to work on 2G's, please stay on topic. If you want to know more about and discuss MMS on 2G's I have posted a package to enable it here: http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/f201/76868.htm

I really hope the reason why this doesn't work with only the known .plist adjustments is found out soon. I hate to use PDAnet, iPhoneModem doesn't work for me either.

Agree, I'm still using Alk's 'manual' solution from mid-2008, but it is a bit cumbersome, and those other programs have disadvantages too. What Apple has made seems very convenient.

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.
Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
* on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
* on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).
