iPhone 2G 3.0 -> 3.1?
May I just use iTunes 9.0 to upgrade my unlocked iPhone 2G 3.0 to 3.1? (If I don't need to use Cydia, may I just click "Update"?)
Or, I need use PwnageTool to Unlock/Jailbreak it again?

No. You need to use pwnage again to jailbreak/unlock, and restore as new phone.

After reading through the posts, Dev-Team Blog and the iClarified tutorial (iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G on OS 3.1 Using PwnageTool (Mac)) I, too, plan to update my already unlocked/JB/activated 2G from 3.0 to 3.1.
Having a detailed look at the iClarified tutorial, I wonder if all the settings described there are really necessary (for me)?:
1) Step 6, in General Settings, you should select "Enable BB update" - Is that really necessary? I thought the BB was not modified by the last few IPSWs, including 3.1? As well, my phone (i.e. BB) is already unlocked.
2) Step 6, in BootNeuter section: Select "Neuter Bootloader" and "Unlock BB": Again, I am already unlocked, so the second option seems superfluous, doesn't it? And I believe I read somewhere, that a neutered bootloader will stay neutered through subsequent updates?
3) Step 10: "When prompted if your iPhone has been Pwned before, we clicked No". -- I am pretty sure I my phone has been pwned, as I previously upgraded from 111 -> 114 -> 202 -> 21 -> 221 -> 30. -- Whats the difference if you select "Yes" instead of "No", anyway?
What do you think? Is it safer to just follow the tutorial literally, even if some things might be done twice, like the unlock?

yeah - i'm wondering exactly the same thing.
Can I just update with the original firmware through itunes, or do I need to restore again? I haven't done this in a while but I think I've just the update button in itunes before.
Can someone please clarify this... thanks...

Official update software = brick!
You do not want to use the official .ipsw file from apple to update. This will update your baseband (cell modem firmware). Currently, there is no unlock for this baseband.
You will want to use a custom made .ipsw file for your "Shift>Restore" update process. This will update and jailbreak your firmware to 3.1 without updateing the baseband.
Just regurgitating what I have read here from the supporters and respected members of this forum. The custom .ipsw update worked for my phone 3.01 to 3.1.

Thanks, so there's no way but to create a custom firmware and restore?

Currently, no. I've seen some guy who unlocked/activated his iPhone without a custom firmware, but his method involved downgrading to 2.2, QuickPwning the phone and then upgrading to 3.1! Too much time and effort! A custom IPSW will have your phone up and running in less than fifteen minutes!!

Hi there,
if i update from 3.0.1 to 3.1 will I be okay just following the tutorial on iclarified? Also once update my phone to 3.1, will i lose all my contacts, msgs etc from the phone (i know this happened b4 when you select restore as a new phone so i'm wondering how to avoid this)
Thanks!
