I know this is not the full IOS4, but at least you can upgrade some features that were not available in 3.x.
I also hope someone will port iOS4 to iPhone 2G with multi tasking, but this will do for now.

2G is outdated, slow and 4 years old. Time to upgrade buddy.

Hackers have discovered that Apple has removed any support for the 2G from baseband kernel extension on iOS 4.0
This presents a real roadblock to ever getting iOS 4 working on 2G. You would either need to use the 3.x version of this kext (probably would be incompatible) or to write a new kext (which might not load as they need to be signed by Apple)

I agree that it is outdated and slow, but it's only 3 years old.

Actually it is only 3 years old as of tomorrow.
There are still plenty of other phones shipping with similar or lower specs today. Not as a high end smartphone though.
For me I am happy with iOS 3 on my 2G (which I still use sometimes)

On top of that, it's essentially the same thing as the iPhone 3G, sans 3G modem & assisted GPS. All of the other hardware is exactly the same as the original iPhone!

Excluding the lack of a 3G chip, is there much of a hardware difference from the iPhone 3G?

If you read about the difficulties encountered by planetbeing porting linux to the 3G (after he already had the 2G working) you will realise it is a bit more than just the 3G chip.
As the audio chip was changed, this requires audio support to be handled in a completely different way (which may mean rewriting that kernel driver)
The 2G lacks GPS (it should be easier to remove support than add in support)
wifi/bluetooth are same chip. CPU is the same.

Ahh... It's a shame the completely removed support for the old baseband. Those hackers seemed to be doing really well according to their blog. Too bad they just dropped the project.
