I have a rather unusual problem. I have a British 2G iPhone which I bought from O2 about 18 months ago. It is running (and has been for the entire time I have owned it) OS 1.1.4 on Baseband 04.04.05_G, which was jailbroken and unlocked using ziPhone or something similarly unpleasant.

Anyway, I'd dearly love to update it to use OS 3, as while it still works, 1.1.4 seems to be getting rather rickety in its old age. But I have the problem that the power/sleep button on the top of the phone is completely broken. It doesn't do anything at all. Everything else works as normal, but it must've become gunked up, nothing has been able to make it work again.

Thus I'm not able to put the phone into DFU mode, which seems to be required by redsn0w, and the phone is useless to me unless it can be unlocked to all networks.

My question to you all is whether there is a way I can upgrade the phone (or restore, or whatever, I don't mind wiping the disk), and jailbreak and unlock it, without using the power button. I know it's a long shot, but any help would be much appreciated.

Yes it is possible to get into DFU mode with broken button, it is not so simple but it is possible. It only works with pwnagetool. Will not work with redsn0w or blacksn0w.
