Help upgrading my jailbroken & unlocked iphone 3G from 2.2.1 FW to 3.1.2 under Win Vi
Hello guys, I stumbled upon this fine iPhone forum and I see there are chances I can get some help regarding my problem.
I have an iphone 3G that bought unlocked and last year I jailbroke it using quicksnow under windows vista. My actual firmware is 2.2.1 (5H11) and would like to upgrade it to 3.1.2 (I know I must not try update to 3.1.3, since I have read about the risks).
Is there a chance for me to access any step-by-step guide on how to proceed? I have found many but are not especifically devoted to this issue and don't wanna mess it up. Take into account I am not very good at this hacking stuff... and of course the piece doesn't come cheap hehe.
I would also require some comments on how to backup my iphone info in the process, or can this be done just by backuping via iTunes?
I'd very much appreciate any help. Thanks a lot for reading me and being patient... (also please excuse my lame English)

I recommend that you upgrade to OS 3.0 first and jailbreak/unlock that.

Going to 3.1.2 is a bit more tricky. I recommend pwnagetool, which is the same recommendation that the dev team makes (this is the group who have made jailbreaks for pretty much every iPhone OS released until now).
The single biggest reason why custom ipsw is recommended, is that it keeps you away from loading original Apple ipsw which usually include updates to close off jailbreak and unlock holes (like for example 3.1.3 which can't be unlocked right now and direct jailbreak is only possible on some model iPhones)
The problem is: Pwnagetool is mac only, the dev team is working on a windows version but I have no idea when that will be ready.
Pwnagetool does two main things.
- Takes Apple IPSW (iPhone software updates) and produces a customised IPSW which is pre-jailbroken, has Cydia installed and also can be pre-hacktivate or have disabled the modem firmware updating (which could otherwise break unlock).
- Prepares the iPhone to be jailbroken by sending a special file via iTunes
If your iPhone is already jailbroken, then you can simply download a custom IPSW from the internet that someone else made with pwnagetool. Then you shift-click restore in iTunes and select the custom IPSW you downloaded.
Then you need to reinstall ultrasn0w to get your unlock back.
We are not allowed to link to custom IPSW on this forum, you will have to google and find this for yourself. Make sure you download one for an iPhone1,2 model and that it is activated.
Many people recommend blackra1n and blacksn0w, both these tools have been responsible for the majority of problem reports here on hackint0sh since they were released. Blacksn0w kills wifi for maybe 20% of the people who use it. Blackra1n's biggest problem is that it requires you to load a stock Apple IPSW - which then forces you to use blacksn0w to unlock.
You will see plenty of people still say that blackra1n and blacksn0w worked for them.

Yes you can backup via iTunes. iTunes makes a backup each time you sync the phone. It does not keep old backups, so each sync will overwrite the previous backup. If you want to keep old backups (for example from before or just after a major upgrade, you need to make a copy of the backup via windows explorer.
One thing to keep in mind, is that restoring backups made from jailbroken phones can cause bad battery life and poor performance. It does not always happen but it is often the first thing suggested as a troubleshooting step when there are reports of performance problems.

Thanx!
Hey thanx a lot Olethros! That came along extremely fast! And very professional as well.
I will print this and go into the details and get back when succesful.
Will also consider the battery issue...
Above all and not minding your directions, would you recommend me to hold until the dev team comes up with a solution to 3.1.3 or would you advise me to move on and do this now?
No more taking time from ya
Cheers, many thanks again my friend

Look at the two links to iClarified, these detail the exact process for the 2.2.1 to OS 3.0 part.

Thanks a lot my friend.
I have just performed the iTunes update to 3.0 and am going for the jailbreak and unlocking.
So far I will stay in this fw; I still have to get myself together from the experience and put up some courage to move on to 3.1.2.
I very much appreciate your help!
Greetings from Buenos Aires, ARG
