agrrr, I never had this one. In DFU mode I always got things done at least when trying to restore to an Apple stock fw file.
Did you try another computer?

Might be able to jump on a laptop at some point but I'm still worried! Haven't read anything on the net like this!!

Exact same thing just happened to me. when you get stuck in the dfu mode, unplug, shut down by simply holding the power button, and then given your error, when you restart normally, the dfu alert on the phone will come back again.

At that point plug in to a USB 2.0 socket. I believe this problem ocurred to me because the version downloaded installs a new driver on itunes (8.2.1 / vista / 3.0.1 ). I its related to the connection ie using a usb hub or using a usb NON 2.0 driver.

I haven't heard of such type of problem yet. In DFU never occurs such type of problem. I think there may be any hardware problem though I am not sure. You may bring it to any service centre.
