DFU or restore mode? there is a difference. if you see anything on your screen (the connect to itunes image) you are in restore mode not DFU mode. if you ARE in dfu mode than you are probably in leopard 10.5.6 (if you are on a mac) which has buggy usb components you need to either swap in 10.5.5 ones as described elsewhere on the forums (i dont remember the link offhand) or connect your iphone to a hub. you would've found this information if you actually looked through this thread rather than adding to it without reading it.

I've tried everything!
I've updated from a Pwnage iPhone 2.2.1 to 3.0. Since I'm not able to active the SDK I want to go back to 2.2.1.
What ever I do I will always get an error 21 or 1600.
I've tried it with a Mac 10.5.6 + iTunes 8.1. Since I thought that the DFU bug was causing the problem I've tried another Mac: 10.5.5 + iTunes 8.1. Again the same errors.
I went back to Windows XP + iTunes 8.1. And strangely this iTunes will only recognise the iPhone when it is turned on normally (slide for SOS call). Whenever I put the iPhone in recovery of DFU mode iTunes won't recognise it.
HELP!!

recovery mode of DFU mode? do you mean recovery OR DFU? they ARE different. if you see a picture on your phone of the "connect to itunes' you are in RECOVERY they ARE different this is a VERY important point. Recovery mode will not get you back to 2.2.1. Run through the pwnagetool DFU section, there is a button at the top to help get you in DFU. plugging in your phone while its off and holding down the home puts you in recovery mode only not DFU mode and that will NOT be sufficient. Your screen should be completely black/blank in DFU mode.

1) Plug iPhone into computer w/ iTunes open (if it's a Mac with 10.5.6, there are other issues, search the forum)
2) Hold power button, swipe to turn off iPhone.
3) With iPhone still connected to computer, hold Power and Home buttons for TEN SECONDS and TEN SECONDS ONLY, then release the Power button while still holding the home button. *NOTHING WILL BE ON THE SCREEN WHEN YOU RELEASE THE POWER BUTTON, IF YOU SEE THE APPLE LOGO YOU WAITED TO LONG*
4) Continue holding the Home button until iTunes tells you it detects a phone in restore mode.
Make sure you're not holding the power button too long, that's what I managed to do every time and it kept bringing me to the 'Connect me to iTunes' screen.

great. I did this, now I could restore to firmware 2.02, then I used QuickPwnRC3 to unlock, (as QuickPwnRC2 is not working for me), then update to the beta firmware 3.0, now I have a working iphone 2G with latest beta unlocked fine.
great.

It will work
If you have the correct ISPW 1,2.2.1_5H11
If you follow the steps provided to get your iPhone in DFU mode
If you do this step by step like these wonderful people have so graciously explained, then it will work.
I did it and have absolutly no issues.
By the way I knew I was in for some issues with and upgraded beta ISPW but I have to tell ya that I have seen way better BETA's than this. Actually Windows 7 beta is great.
I am not saying Apple has done anything wrong, just that I have seen better BETA's. Apple makes wonderful software. Also there GUI's I have to say are the best money can buy. SO thank you apple for improving our lives.
