I have two fellows claiming they have upgraded to 3.1 on there first gen & activation has remained.
I have questioned them as this would work in 2.0 but when 3.0 was released it also brought in a partition wipe with the removal of the hactivation.
Maybe someone with a spare 1st gen can confirm ? This would mean we are back to methods like we used in 2.0

Hi,
I got exactly the same reports. Under 2.x you could simply upgrade and stat activated which did not work with 3.0.1. Would be strange to see they reverted to 2.x tech.

It's not about Apple or 3.0. It's about hacktivation: in order to hacktivate with youtube in 3.0 dev team changed hacktivation, and changed again with the current push fix.
So now i'm wondering...what happens if i update an iPhone 2G with push fix to 3.1? Does it remain hacktivated?
Edit: moreover from 2.x.x you could update to 3.0 / 3.0.1 and have hacktivation but everything worked except youtube (and push of course).

just don't
Unlocked 3.0.1 > iTunes 9 > Update to 3.1 > Stuck on activation screen > 100 attempts to enter DFU on other Mac > DFU > Going back to 3.0...

It can be done, but you will need to go back to 2.2.1
Make a backup of your iphone in itunes 9.0
Use Itunes 8.0 to restore the iphone in DFU to factory 2.2.1
After that use quicpwn to activate.
Setup in itunes as a new iphone (different name as when u used before)
Use shift-restore to flash a Custom 2.2.1 firmware.
After that install itunes 9.0 again and Shift-Update (or press update) to go to 3.1
This somehow leaves the activation, but no Youtube and jailbreak for now.
Hope this helps someone.
