Cydia crashing on "loading data", can't fix, can't get SSH...
Hello all,
First post here. I just bought a used iPhone 2G off craigslist. It was JB'd and unlocked using redsnow, but it had a bunch of apps, porn, and errors, and it also was dual booting android which I didn't need.
I decided to start fresh and shift+click restored 3.1.2 in iTunes. Then I used blackra1n to jailbreak...which of course allows the install of cydia.
However, I have yet to be able to open cydia. It just says "Loading Data" and then crashes after about 15 seconds.
I have read that there may be some corrupted files on the iphone and that I need to "SSH" them off. But the phone doesnt have SSH. They say to get SSH on the phone to install it from "Installer". But apparently you get "Installer" from cydia, which I cannot open.
I feel that I am very stuck here.
This phone was to a be a present for a family member on T-mobile, and now I can't even get into cydia. to get it set up right. Please help, I am completely at a loss..

I'm not sure if that is the correct way to remove android. Think it would have been smarter to uninstall first android and then restore phone.
Also blackra1n is good for only one thing - when your hardware power button is broken - blackra1n can still jailbreak (if you are running 3.1.2 or3.1). Other than that blackra1n is junk. Use a real jailbreak (redsn0w or pwnagetool)
You don't need installer to get SSH

Thanks for the reply.
I did not see why completely restoring a phone wouldn't get rid of any of the junk i didn't want. And clearly its too late to remove it any other way.
Blackrain does the jailbreak for me every time I have tried, and it didn't remove my unlock the previous owner had done (which is nice now considering I can't get cydia open to get bootneuter anymore...
I don't have a mac so I can't use ownagetool as far as I know. I have no idea how to use redsnow.
You say I don't need Installer to get SSH on the iphone 2G, would you please tell me how it is possible without cydia or installer?
I found a program called iPhone Folders which supposedly would work to remove the corrupted files, except my only PC is win 7 64 and it doesn't run on that... It's getting supremely frustrating.

Yes it's too late and you seem to have got away with this.
I've not read up enough on the way openiBoot modifies the NOR. I just know that a NOR backup is a strongly recommended part of the initial iDroid installation (for good reason)

Blackra1n as a basic/barebones jailbreak - works fine - but geohot cut lots of corners - which start to appear when you actually try and use the jailbroken phone.
I've detailed these deficiencies with blackra1n again and again here on hackint0sh, won't repeat myself to much. Simply will stick by my prior statement - that you should only use blackra1n as a way to initially pwn a device with a broken home/power button.

The 2G unlock (as implemented by bootneuter) survives across restores. this has nothing to do with jailbreak. A jailbreak should not ever remove an unlock. For most iPhone unlocks (bootneuter is the exception) simply restoring the phone with an original apple IPSW will remove the unlock (and jailbreak)

One of the negatives of blackra1n is that it doesn't pre-install Cydia during jailbreak. Cydia is downloaded from the internet after you have jailbroken. This was done to make blackra1n faster and smaller to download. However it causes problems for many. It might be part of your problem.

iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G on OS 3.1.3 Using RedSn0w (Windows)
You should skip the steps related to unlock (as I said earlier bootneuter unlock survives restores)
The above guide is a little incorrect, where the screenshots and the text don't agree - the pictures are correct.
You also need both 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 IPSW - download links here: http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm

What I meant was that Installer.app is defunct/obsolete - It never supported iOS 3.0 or higher.
In the iOS 1.x days you could install Cydia from Installer.app - this is likely the source of your confusion.
It is possible to install SSH via iPHUC - this doesn't require Cydia at all.
Also - you can boot from a ramdisk and install Cydia via that (that is how redsn0w does it)

Another failing of blackra1n - it doesn't install the AFC2 service - this means that iPhone folders (and all similar apps) won't work.
This is clearly stated on the iPhone Folders page
To be able to browse full filesystem content on blackra1n jailbroken phones don't forget to install afc2add from Cydia.
There are other AFC2 clients for windows - Downloads - iphonebrowser - Project Hosting on Google Code, DiskAid transfers Files to iPhone, iPad & iPod touch, USB External Drive and i-FunBox | File Manager, Browser, Explorer, Transfer Tool for iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch via USB for example - these don't integrate so tightly into windows explorer and have more chance of working on Windows 7 x64 (i also run windows 7 x64 and have had no problems using diskaid)

Now that is a fricken forum response!
Thanks that was so helpful!
So restoring to 3.1.3 and using redsn0w 0.9.3 for example has a good chance of fixing my cydia issues, and no chance of screwing up my unlock? That's great news!

Not redsn0w 0.9.3 - use only 0.9.2 or 0.9.4 (if you can't find 0.9.2) - 0.9.2 was stable, 0.9.3 experimental beta that was abandoned, 0.9.4 added support for old bootrom iPod touch 2G but was never declared stable (I think because they broke something else when adding ipt2G). 0.9.5 and higher are for iOS 4.x

Old thread, but I was able to fix mine with this exact same issue (no Android OS or other complications, just a fresh 3.1.2 jailbroken with blackra1n and a non-working Cydia with no SSH or USB filesystem access). I simply ran the Spirit jailbreak and now Cydia works properly. Spirit
Edit: I couldn't use Spirit to start with because my phone needed to be hactivated, and I tried several times with redsn0w and got nowhere due to the black screen freezing issue. Blackra1n is the only jailbreak tool I got to work on mine.
