can't downgrade 3.0 to any previous firmware...
Hi folks, i've tried everything to try and fix this and need a fresh pair of eyes.
My problem is that when I try to restore to anything below 3.0, i'm getting the dreaded 16xx errors in DFU mode. I have not found a solution to this as yet and was wondering if someone could help me out.
The phone unfortunately won't do anything in anything less than iTunes 8.2.
If i use normal restore mode and try for example 1.1.4 or 2.1 or 2.2.1 firmware I get error 20 etc ... using the same firmware in DFU i get 1600, 1601 or 1604 error.
At the moment the phone is sitting on v3.0 F/W, a fresh clean apple version. The modem firmware is sitting at 04.05.04_G.
Is there ANY way to do this.
Thanks for your help guys.
ps I should also say, that I have tried this on vista, xp and windows 7 with the same results :-(

I tested this just a few days ago. My testing was on Windows 7 x64 (however you will get the same results in 32 bit Windows 7)
Was running iTunes 9.x with a 2G iPhone running OS 3.1.2
I properly removed all traces of iTunes/Mobile Device drivers and restarted.
Then installed iTunes 8.1.1, had a small problem with the iTunes preferences/library being too new. This was fixed by renaming/moving these so that iTunes 8.1.1 created new blank preferences/library.
Put my 2G iPhone in DFU mode and restored without an error to OS 2.2.1
The same principle applies for earlier OS versions. iTunes 7.7-8.1.1 were designed for OS 2.x and iTunes 7.4-7.6.1 were designed for OS 1.x
Apple changed the protocol for communicating via USB to the iPhone with iTunes 8.2 (mostly to support USB tethering feature introduced in OS 3.x) which is one of the reasons that you cannot use iTunes 8.2 or higher to restore an OS prior to 3.0
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7 explains how to properly remove all iTunes components on recent Windows versions.

Hi,
I had the same problem and still have additional baseband problems.
For me the only solution that worked was to use iTunes 7.7 on a fresh windows installation and downgrade to 2.2.1 firmware. All other firmware gave me the 16xx errors and higher version of iTunes gave me the same or other probs.
Hope this helps.
