Bypass AT&T requirement to add new data plan
Alright guys,
I came to your community for a problem that I cannot solve no matter what. I know unlocking and jailbreaking Iphones and Ipods pretty well. However, I made a huge newbie mistake today!
I will try to put this in easy words, so you guys can understand..lol I had an Unlocked Iphone 2g. I went to download an app, says "You must have firmware 3.0 to download this app." So I figure, I will update to the latest firmware, unlock it with some program and download the app. Huge problem here it comes... When I updated to the latest firmware, and put in my At&t Simcard, it says that I need to add a data service plan to this Iphone, to continue to use it.
Pretty naste, right? Even worse, I cannot restore it, or anything. The only option at all with this Iphone, is to activate it with a data service plan. I can't even use the phone itself for anything but an emergency.
My question is, How can I do one of the following things: Unlock my Iphone ANY SORT OF WAY REGARDLES OF FIRMWARE, Unlock my Iphone with the latest firmware, or do you think its possible to put my ACTUAL Iphone registered sim card in this, too bypass the locked part?
Guys I am so sorry if this didn't make any sense, I tried to explain it as best as I could.
Thanks to those of you who help me!
Thanks

They are ridiculous...forcing customers to add $30 plan
I'm sorry I can't help you, but I am just as angry as you. I think we need to get a whole lot of people to take a stand against this new policy that forces smart phone users to buy a $30/month data plan when they don't want the stupid internet on their phone. It's a really ignorant way to make money as far as I am concerned!
I hope you find a solution to your problem.

I had a similar problem. I bought my iPhone 2g used from someone and it was already upgraded to firmware version 3.1.3, thankfully by the time that I ended up with the phone redsn0w was able to easily jailbreak and unlock it. It still had the inactive sim card from the previous user but I am not completely sure if that made a large difference. I already have an AT&T plan but prior to unlocking and jailbreaking I had the same problem you have. Once it was unlocked (no sim card inserted during jailbreak process) I was able to pop my sim in and it worked. Try looking up redsn0w and try it out. I've heard that upgrading to more recent firmware has messed up unlocking on various occasions.
