i can now confirm that if you do alt update from itunes 8.2 with 1st iphone 2.2.1 it will upgrade with no activation and will still keep tmobile running.
just to note.
No MMS for iPhone 1st gen. Also youtube is down for some reason on both wifi and edge. Push notification setting missing from system preferences.
Did you unlock your phone or was it an original unlock?

Look in my Thread. Having the same problem on my 1st gen. Possible solution would be erasing the youtube part of the backup and restoring from that. We just have to find out what part of it is youtube.

Same here, I've updated my 1st generation iPhone with Option+click Update at iTunes.
It still working, unlocked but the jailbroken has been lost. Spotlight and other features working, not youtube.
I had installed categories so all the items who were in folders have gone, is it possible to fix that entering by SSH and fixing the links? I don't know how Categories works exactly.
Update - Minutes later... I guess I can't enter by SSH because I have not jailbreak at the moment, am i wrong?

If someone can give me confirmation to make sure...
1st gen iphones need to download
iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw right?
Not
iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
Because I initally d/l the 1,2 but see on another site there is a 1,1 version.
I don't know the other site that well so kinda concerned about reliability.
You think any harm if you accidentally installed teh 1,2 version?

Yeap u have to get 1.1 for the 1st gen iphone.
Chances are something is gonna go wrong if you try the ipsw for 3g to update 2g.
