What OS are you running now? What tool did you use to unlock it now?
Orange are only selling newer iPhone models.
O2 is now offering legitimate unlocks for existing iPhone customers, I assume the 2G was originally locked to O2.
The 2G has has the ability to be unlocked permanently via BootNeuter for quite some time, however there are still advantages to getting a legitimate unlock from the original carrier. Proper activation for example.

well i got the 2g when it first came out, and now if you update your software on your iphone you dont need to unlock it to put any 02 sim in there, so i was wondering if the latest software would just let any orange sim work in the same way?
my friend is having my old 2g iphone, i was going to update it and unlock it to use it with orange, but i thought maybe the apple iphone software will just let me use the orange sim in it with out me having to unlock it.
I wanted to try and avoid unlocking it as he is a serial updater and i can just see him updating it and having to unlock it again etc etc
so what do u think my best option is?

This has been confirmed earlier on this forum, the o2 iPhones are still locked to o2. No apple software updates or carrier support updates via iTunes will fix this.
I recommend he contacts o2 and asks for an official unlock, this costs at least £15 depending on the length of remaining contract on the iPhone.
This way your friend can switch to Orange and update whenever he wants without hassle.
