Yeah, you should downgrade your iTunes to version 7.5 or so search around, this question has been answered before.
The tools that might fix this problem generally work best with 1.x OS, so downgrading to OS 3.0 is not enough.

No, I bought it this way on eBay. Just thought that I could fix it.
Why is that only on OS 3.0 does not give me the 1011 error.
But can't restore to 2.2.1 using iTunes 8.0.2. That did give me the 1011 error

Hi, I have exactly the same problem. If anyone has any idea what to do I would really appreciate if he would share. Thanks!!

Same problem here
When I bought the iPhone from Craigslist I noticed that the modem firmware was very old. That should have raised a red flag. But I went through the purchase. Now I got burned :-(.
The iphone 2G worked fine for 2 weeks and then suddenly I got the dreaded no IMEI, ... problem.
I am thinking of putting 3.1.3 firmware using the latest iTunes. I know that would make all hopes of unlocking in future impossible (due to 5.12.01 bootloader issue), but atleast I can use the iPhone as a phone again :-), with a valid ATT sim card.
