1.1.2 -> 3.0 on 2G
Hi,
I'm looking for advice on how best to upgrade a 2G from 1.1.2 to 3.0.
I found a 2G is its still unopened box that I thought I lost after buying it in Nov '07. According to the serial#, it will be on 1.1.2 when I open it. I would like to give it to my mother (87 yrs and wants to learn the iPhone...props to mom!) so it has to be in perfect working order.
I would appreciate it if people could share their experiences and thinking on the best way to do this.
My plan...
1) upgrade to 1.1.4 OTB
2) use pwnage to hacktivate/jb/unlock with BootNeuter
3) upgrade to 2.2.1 with pwnage
4) upgrade to 3.0 and jb when Dev Team release their new tools
If I understand correctly, the 2G will stay unlocked when upgraded to 3.0.
A couple questions...
Qa: Is there a better way to do this?
Qb: Can I use the latest version of pwnage (2.2.5) to hacktivate/jb/unlock at 1.1.4, or should I use an earlier version?
Qc: Should I use an earlier version of iTunes, or is 8.1 ok?
Qd: Most importantly, did I leave anything out?
Thanks for any input you can share. I followed this forum constantly in 2007. Since then, I forgot my password and reg email so I'm starting off fresh again. Many thanks to the Dev Team for their amazing work and tools!
Cheers,
decagon
Edit: This post might be better for the 2G Pwnage Forum, so maybe a mod can move it?

There's no need to unlock it at each and every stage. Just download the subsequent versions that you have missed (here) and install them as per normal. Once you get to 3.0, just unlock it then - if the tools haven't been released yet they will be shortly.

QA - see above
QB - see above
QC - you need iTunes 8.2 to upgrade to 3.0
QD - not that I can see
Hope this helps.

Thanks!
Which is better to use now? Pwnage or RedSn0w?
I'm using my ATT Sim (from my official ATT 3GS) to hacktivate/jb/unlock the 2G, then we'll put in my mother's ATT Sim. She has official ATT acct with an old Nokia, but we're not going to register the 2G with ATT to save her the $30/mo.

Here is the way to go for:
Make sure to have iTunes 8.2 installed on your Mac/PC
Put the simcard you want to use later in the iPhone, if the iPhone complains, no problem.
Connect iPhone an Mac/PC, if iTunes starts or is running, quit it.
Shut down the iPhone if running by holding Home and Start/Sleep until the screen goes black. Take a breath and relax
Put the iPhone in DFU mode:
1. Press HOME and Start/Sleep fpr 10 seconds (count 100, 200, 300,...)
2. Let go of Start/Sleep but keep holding Home.
3. Hold home until iTunes starts automatically (about 10-20 seconds)
4. Keep holding Home until iTunes finds an iPhone in Recovery mode.
5. Let go of home.
6. The iPhone's screen is black = DFU mode
7. In itunes hit "Restore"
This will install 3.0.
For me redsn0w worked like a breeze

Thank you volkspost!
That makes total sense to me. Thanks for explaining so clearly. I would have made an error using my sim instead of my mother's. I'll have my mother's sim this weekend and give it a shot.
In case my mother decides she doesn't want an iPhone after trying it out (hard to believe, I know), I'll give it to my niece. Do I have to go through the RedSn0w process again with her sim to hacktivate so she can use it, or is there a short cut since the phone is already jb/unlocked?
