guys, pardon the interruption, but I think that the best way of doing this would be directly through the USB cable, am I right? because wi-fi seems to just take FOREVER....
I have been able to ssh into my iphone from my laptop running ubuntu 9.10 over the usb cable, but I haven't been able to do it the other way around. Do any of you guys have any ideas on this?

Also, for people on 3GS I think that you need to add bs=1M to the command as below:

    The whole shebang:
    ssh user@iphone-ip dd if=/dev/rdisk0 bs=1M | dd of=iphone-dump.img

    Just the system partition:
    ssh user@iphone-ip dd if=/dev/rdisk0s1 bs=1M | dd of=iphone-root.img

    Just the user data partition:
    ssh user@iphone-ip dd if=/dev/rdisk0s2s1 bs=1M | dd of=iphone-user.img

Theoretically yes, but we'd need some libs to make it work. I have not looked into that much, but "NerveGas" (Jonathan Zdziarski) is using this way. This is not public yet as far as I know. You wont need a jailbreak ;-)
But I guess we'd have to wait a bit until this method goes public.

dude, how on earth do you think that you're going to achieve this from a live cd....................
only if you have linux formatted partitions on your hard drive of 32 gb FREE SPACE will you be able to.........

That is good, it means you had free space. I haven't tried the dd command with ntfs, I didn't know that it works. Good for you!!!
May you find the lost data. I suggest using Scalpel to 'carve' (recover) the needed extensions.
