Why do you pay? There is a simple way.
Windows not tested.
Requirements : iTunes 9.1, iPhone OS 4.0 Beta.
How to Do.
1. Edit your hosts file. (/etc/hosts) and add below.
127.0.0.1 albert.apple.com
2. Open iTunes with iPhone connected, Option+Click "Update Check", and choose 4.0 firmware.

Of course, after you finish all your works, remove the line and save it.
That's it.

why does everything have to be free?
if it helps someone pay for the developers fees they why not donate a few dollars/pounds?
its the same as buying your mate a drink in the pub for fixing your computer, or putting up some shelves

Can you be more specific with the first step. What do you mean, by add below? Just paste it on to the bottom?

So, I am the bad guy here? Uh-oh.
I always thought UDID is important, should not be given to anybody... That's my concern.
It is good thing to donate, but for whom doesn't like or concern things like me, just use upper method.

1-1. Copy /etc/hosts file to your desktop.
-2. Open it with your TextEdit.
-3. Add this line at very last of the text.
127.0.0.1 albert.apple.com
-4. Save it and copy it to /etc. Finder will want root's password.

If you got network error, there is nothing I can do. You should do exact the same way - update from 3.1.3 to 4.0

Just do DFU Restore and follow this method.
But you should install 3.1.3 first.
