NAI and tethering
Hi I'm new to this forum. I've had an iphone 3G for about a month. It's jailbroken (thanks to the dev team) and working pretty much 100%, apart from a few apps that just don't seem to want to be deleted!
I do however have a technical question related to using PDANet or Netscape. I'm interested to know if network providers can tell whether you are surfing using your iphone when you're tethered to your laptop. As we know there is some talk that the providers (AT&Tin US, 02 in UK) want to charge extra for tethered usage, despite the fact that we've been able to use mobile phones as modems for many years now.
I've done a bit of research and have discovered that there is a system called Network Access Indentification (NAI) which allegedly identifies such usage, but is switchable in the mobile device. For windows mobiles i found a post which loosely describes how to change the settings in the registry to achieve anonymity:
But this is for windows mobiles.
Does anyone know if iPhones snitch back to their providers when we use PDANet or Netshare, and if they do whether we can switch off the NAI in the relevant .plist and if so how?
I've asked this question in a couple of other forums and have drawn a blank - no one seems to know much about NAI, or they're not talking! Anyway, i reckon if anyone knows about this they'll be here. And if there is a fairly simple way to turn off the NAI in an iphone it seems to me to be a very very useful thing to be able to do.
Any help please would be much appreciated
For as long as I've used NetShare I've never been dinged with extra data charges.
Now that I have 3.0 on my 3G I wonder if I will get nailed. I have some concern as I installed the APN install/upgrade - I'm hoping that as a result of that they don't start screwing me with tethering charges.
PS. NetShare works just fine with 3.0 on the 3g.
