Yeah, the iPhone won't activate for anyone that doesn't have their device registered, even though there is no way to register it because when you click the link in iTunes it just shoots you back to the main iPhone Dev Center.

Yep. Exactly the case. Here's a screen of what you would get if you got it to install:
Click

Yep, I got the same one. I found it interesting that the slide for emergency screen had a pink background instead of black like it usually does in 1.1.1+. If you want to get into mobile phone, do slide for emergency, and hook it up to your computer. while you are on the slide for emergency keypad, rename the device on the side thing in iTunes and it will get confused, first going to the main screen then to MobilePhone. From there I got to check out the Preferences.app (add a contact with prefs: as a url). New baseband, parental controls, a new 'Calender' menu, and that's all I can tell so far.
Did you see the the Exchange integration in the MobileMail app ?
is it registered by the iphone's serial or IMEI number? It might be tough to crack.
Naw, this will not be so hard to crack...
I remember the iphone was bypassed for activation within a week after I got my iphone on June 30 last year. It will be interesting to see how long this is going to take. I see a few groups of 2.0 beta users:
1. Developers who want to start testing the new app in iphone who did not get into the developer program.
2. End users who want to get some of the 2.0 features now - Exchange support, Cisco VPN, etc.
3. Hackers who want to start working on 2.0 jailbreak/unlock etc.
I agree we should wait for the developers to have a chance to "look" into the beta firmware before they become widespread. I think depend on who you are and what you are planning to do with the firmware give it a few more days/weeks. I am sure someone will make this happen.
Good luck to the people who got the beta firmware.
There is no way of ensuring that the FW isn't watermarked, so I doubt that this file should ever be released unless the source isn't worried about a potential lawsuit. Realize that the watermark could be anywhere, and it won't be recognizable as such either.
Hack away hackers!
