iPhone 4S simlock-free got locked
Here're the story. I've bought an iPhone 4S in Amsterdam Apple Store (full price, no contracts) this March, brought it home (outside EU) and activated with my old SIM card from a local carrier (Tele2), and it was working fine until I relocated to another city and decided to switch to a new carrier. The phone wouldn't accept any SIM cards but the one I originally activated it with. When I insert a new SIM, the phone displays apple logo with animation and then locks saying 'Activation Required'. Any attempts to activate it result in 'the iPhone you connected may be damaged and cannot be activated for service' message. It also wouldn't show the carrier name in the corner. The SIM cards I try work in other iPhones, my Tele2 SIM works in other phones as well. Restore didn't help. My local Tele2 has no means to lock or unlock phones, nor can Dutch Tele2 lock phones that were bought without contract. I've read about other people having similar activation troubles with their Dutch iPhone 4S' bought in March, which got fixed by Apple Support. But when I called Apple, they couldn't resolve the issue (or even identify the cause) from their side, suggesting me to return the phone to the store.
Anyone with a knowledge of the activation procedure, could you please explain how is this possible?
