Iphone 4S Disabled.
I received an Iphone 4s runs ios 5.0.1 from a friend the other day, being that I'm more computer literate than he is, anyways I said I'd try figure out what to do - The iphone is disabled, its passcoded, but can't put anymore attempts in, it says connect to itunes.
Now we connected it to his PC downloaded latest itunes and attached iphone comes up with it not being able to connect because it has a passcode, we cant click restore on the device as its synced with another itunes (the one from his old PC that he no longer has since upgrading his PC).
I read it was possible to connect in DFU mode and then restore, but when we put it into DFU mode and attach to itunes, itunes doesnt recognise the device, doesnt give up any notification whatsoever.
What to do?
What you need to do is to zero out and reinstall the iOS. That will reset the whole phone so it will be like it was brand new, with the newest version of the operating system. Unfortunately, it'll make it unjailbreakable (if you care), and it'll also erase all your data (if it wasn't backed up, which in your case, since you no longer have the original computer it was backed up with, it probably wasn't). But that's the only option I can see to solving the problem.
The only way I now to do this (upgrade) is to put it into DFU, but if you're having troubles doing that, then it may be problematic. Try seeing if you can get iTunes to recognize it (you may have to upgrade iTunes). If so, they simply click on the device and click on the "upgrade" option when it appears. If you can't do this, I'd probably suggest seeing if the local Apple store could do it for you.
Once you get it upgraded, you'll have to sign in to the original user's account (on HIS current machine) in order to get whatever data was backed up on it. If nothing gets uploaded, then visit the "Purchased" section on the Apps store to redownload everything you purchased.
Sorry, but that's about the best that I can do for you. I'd probably be able to walk you through upgrading, but while I've already done it multiple times, it's so infrequent I can never remember how to do it from one time to the next. For that, I'd try Googling "Upgrading iPhone" and see if they give options for when it doesn't work.
Could you detail how you were able to restore your passcoded iPhone 4S in DFU mode? I'm having a similar problem with a passcoded 4S, and I have never gotten anywhere trying to restore it with an image file (or Apple's own firmware in recovery mode).
