Default Using an iPhone 4 on an AT&T plan for an android phone? Possible?

Greeting from down under fellow hackint0shers

I have a loved one in the USA who recently renewed/upgraded her cell phone plan and got herself a Samsung Galaxy. She had so many problems with it, she sent it back and they sent her a new one. But the new one, while it lasted a little longer, is still a piece of crap and she has many of the same problems with it. Phone gets super hot burning her ear and hands, buttons not working (not sure if shes referring to touch screen or actual buttons)

AT&T will not replace the phone again and at todays prices, its too expensive for her to buy a replacement.

I have an Apple iPhone 4, that I'm not using and have offered to send to her. Though she is worried that it may not be compatible with her AT&T plan.
Apparently, AT&T charge an extra $45 a month for an iPhone data plan, and she is currently on an Android data plan.

Over here in Oz, data is just data and it doesn't matter what phone you use, you just slip the sim card in and your good to go.

My question is, can she use my old iphone 4 on her current plan just by using her sim in it. I'm aware she may need to get a new sim card, i do not know if her current sim is a micro sim or not.

If she is gonna have to pay extra for an iPhone data plan, we are gonna have to find another solution.

Some feedback from my American counterparts would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers
    Kev
