Default Upgrading iPhone 4 on IOS 4.1 to IOS 5.0.1

Sorry if this is posted elsewhere. I am unable to locate the information.
I have an iPhone on IOS 4.1, Jailbroken and unlocked using Gevey Pro. The baseband is 2.10.04. I have SHSHs saved in Cydia and Tinyumbrella.
I'd like to upgrade to the IOS 5, but am concerned about inadvertently upgrading the baseband and being unable to use the Gevey unlock.
Would someone please point me to how I could go about upgrading safely to IOS 5. Thanks.

You would need to upgrade to 5.0.1 after creating a custom No Baseband firmware with redsn0w (redsn0w 0.9.10b1), then restoring in Pwned DFU mode. This will preserve your 02.10.04 baseband while upgrading you to iOS 5.0.1, letting you unlock with the Gevey SIM. Make sure you ONLY point iTunes to the no_BB firmware, if you accidentally upgrade to 5.0.1 and update your baseband, you're screwed. Also, use redsn0w to kick your phone into "Pwned DFU" mode -- if you just go into DFU / recovery mode the phone will bootloop or not accept the restore at all.

Thanks n1ckn4m3 for the prompt response! I have been googling expressions like "Pwned DFU mode" etc., from your response and have an idea about what it is all about. I just want to be sure that I don't accidentally get 'screwed'! Is there some kind of tutorial/video that gives the basics of the above process that I can then follow through for my particular baseband, customfirmware etc., Thanks.

iClarified has step by step tutorials available if needed for both jailbreaking and unlocking. The biggest threat is the baseband update -- make sure you personally make the custom non-baseband IPSW in redsn0w, then make 100% sure when you point to the IPSW in iTunes that you point to the no_BB version. You should be fine aside from that.

Thanks again. iClarified itself was kind of difficult to locate the tutorial before I found it under 'most recents'. I trust that this is it:
iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone Without Updating the Baseband (Windows) [5.0.1]

The tutorial states "These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 on iOS 5.0.1." Does this mean that the tutorial is for a phone that already has IOS 5.0.1? Apologize for this extra caution. Just don't want to screw up a good working phone. Thanks.

It's just terminology in this case. You jailbreak the OS while it's running, but you restore it without the baseband. It's true that they include instructions on how to jailbreak a phone running iOS 5.0.1, but the instructions also upgrade the phone to 5.0.1 while blocking the baseband update.

Well, it seemed like everything was going well with the upgrade when I encountered this error " The iPhone 'iPhone' cannot be restored at this time because the iphone software update server counld not be contacted or is temporarily unavailabe". My phone is in the pwned DFU mode. My hosts file has been set to 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com, if this is of any help. Entry 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com has been commented out.

If I were to comment out entry 127.0.0.1 and set the host file to point to cydia's 74.208.10.249 I get the message "An unknown error occurred (1600)"

Just wanted to share that commenting out both the entries in the hosts file fixed the errors. I was able to upgrade to ios 5.0.1, jailbreak and unlock with Gevey Pro sim.

Correct, sorry I missed your first port. You should not keep either line in your hosts file these days, neither are useful and TinyUmbrella will do what it needs to automatically.

    Glad you got it fixed!
