Assuming you are using a Windows OS, the hosts file could be found at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. Open up note pad as an Administrator, navigate to the hosts file and open it. Locate the line that has gs.apple.com in it and either remove it, or 'comment it out' by placing '#' at the beginning of the line. Now save the file and exit out of notepad. You should now be able to complete your restore.

I have also attempted to place in a couple other IP addys in the host file with no luck. i keep getting error code 1602. you seem to know what you are doing so i am asking for more help.
iPhone 3GS, iOS 4.1, BB 06.15.00, custom 5.0.1 IPSW file created with redsnow.
Make sure if you're restoring a custom firmware that you're putting the phone in Pwned DFU mode (not just DFU mode, use iReb or redsn0w to do it) as well as ensuring your hosts file is clean -- there should be nothing in there referring to gs.apple.com. Commenting it out with a # should suffice but if you're still having problems, remove the gs.apple.com line from the hosts file entirely and save. Make sure TinyUmbrella is NOT running its TSS server, and you should be able to restore to a custom 5.0.1 successfully. This is time sensitive though, 5.0.2 will be out soon and when it is, they'll stop signing 5.0.1.
