Is there a way to unlock and unactivated iPhone 4? Basically, I bought it off eBay, turns out it is locked to Spanish network Movistar. I need it unlocked to be on any network in the UK, but to do that I need to activate it, it would seem.

Is there a method of doing so? Thanks in advance!

The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella TinyUmbrella - download, connect iPhone to computer & run TinyUmbrella.

It will tell you iOS version and baseband. Your baseband needs to be 1.59.00 any other version CANNOT currently be unlocked.
Also click "save SHSH" - that will tell you if any SHSH for lower than iOS 4.2.1 are available.

Do not restore phone with iTunes (this will kill any chance of an unlock)

It says my baseband is 3.10.01

So that kills any chance of me getting it unlocked?? What about an official unlock through apple? Or what about in the highstreet?

Movistar spain have to authorise the unlock, none of the UK carriers can or will do this.
There is NO unlock for 3.10.01, anyone offering an unlock on a website or on the highstreet and charging you for this is basically looking to rip you off!!!

Phones are subsidised, the full cost of an iPhone 4 is close to US$900 - anything less, the carrier (and Apple) have to wear some of the cost until the subsidy is paid off via your overpriced mandatory monthly plan.

If you had bought a phone that was locked to another UK carrier, it would have been easier (as they mostly offer an unlock if you are willing to pay an unlock fee) - however with the phone locked to a carrier in another country - it's just not going to happen!

Either try and dispute the sale with eBay - or if you can afford it - sit and wait, that baseband will eventually be unlocked (definitely not before iOS 4.3 is released though!)

Apple said they can unlock it but I need to go through Movistar. Unfortunately I don't speak a word of Spanish! What about if I got hold of a Movistar sim, activated the phone then jailbreak it and get ultrasn0w, would that work??

All unlocks are processed by Apple, but authorised by the carrier that sold the subsidised iPhone.

Even if you could get someone who spoke spanish - Movistar will likely only authorise an unlock if:
a) it's requested by the person who took out the original contract for the subsidised phone
b) there is no financial negative for them (you pay out the remainder of the subsidy - or you agree to take over the original spanish monthly contract)
c) if they decide to offer unlocks at all for the iPhone (AT&T simply refuses to authorise unlocks for example)

Ultrasn0w only supports unlocking 1.59.00 - any other iPhone 4 baseband can only be unlocked via offical/Apple unlock (for now - an update to ultrasn0w will arrive before end of July this year - at the latest)

I will Buy it off you for 200 and your worries will be over
