Default AT&T cracking down on tethering?

has anyone received this? I don't know how they would know that you were using MyWi to send data through the phone but it appears that they may and are starting to contact users. Or maybe they're just seeing those who hacked the ipcc?

The bad news is that they want to charge for tethering, although I could see them asking a one-time setup fee to enable it. the worse news is that tethering requires a change in data plan and the "unlimited" goes away.

I have been hearing this for a while now. I used to tether my iPhone so I could get online and some guy who worked for at&t was telling me they were going to start charging for it. I don't need to tether anymore. But I also hear At&t was going to start charging for streaming as well on their dsl service which is pretty lame!

Hate to say I'm not too surprised. It's always been fairly trivial for AT&T to determine who is using tethering on these devices as the data usage patterns are quite distinct. I would have liked to have seen them extend a little bit more of a hand by offering discounted plans for something like 3 months to those users that they automatically switched, but I suppose they have every right considering any AT&T subscriber had to have signed their evil contract.

From what I hear they are cracking down on heavy users in general and assuming that heavy use=tethering.

To actually inspect the traffic and identify if for example the requests were generated with a desktop web browser user agent is possible, but much more work than simply bashing all heavy users with the same stick.

Agree their approach is quite unfair, not much the customers can do about it though.

If what you are saying is true, I'm glad I don't have to live with that. I'm kind of surprised though how company that treats their customers like that would ever survive. I know I shouldn't be when Sonera (like Finnish AT&T) in my country has similar methods.

Unfortunately, that's one of the problems with the wireless carrier situation in the USA -- the system is stacked in such a manner that consumers are locked in with the single vendor they signed with unless they agree to exorbitant termination fees for their contracts, and only recently have the bigger carriers started offering contract-free devices. Even still, though, as all of the carriers in the US use different frequencies, it's impossible to get a single phone that would roam on any carrier. They're just not interested in fostering healthy competition and the government is too interested in finding ways to tax them into the stone age than they are ensuring fair and reasonable competition between the carriers.

I wish we would adopt a mentality more similar to the EU -- the ability to switch phones from network to network at the drop of a hat forces the carriers to have to provide legitimately good service (or do so cheaper than their competition). In the US, it doesn't matter -- once you're 30 days into your service plan, you've got 23 months until you can switch carriers without spending an arm and a leg.
