Apple has increased the security of the dyld system - this is why the we are stuck with tethered boot until a new untethered hack is released. That very likely affects your hacking.

Interesting... So does that suggest that, once an unteathered JB is available, the same hack could be done to the lib file? Speculation maybe..

I tried some editing the Springboard PLIST files, which configures the visible Icons.

Some kind of code is deleting the Springboard these entries, YouTube icon did not pop up.

I found a way to use this app:
You have to use the SBSetting (Jailbreak is needed).
You can configure the dock functionality and add YouTube.

As soon it is configured there, it will set the usual YouTube app to hide (which did not make sense, because it will not show up there anyway :-)

There you go. Activate SBSetting and tap on dock and there on the new YouTube app. Voilą it can be used as usual.
Anybody found a way on 4.2.1? This way it looks like the app is crashing instantly.

I didn't have any issues with stability of youtube when I use via dock and SBS, although I use their mobile website instead - I think it has far better functionality than the very dated youtube app anyway. You can access favourites, playlists etc.

Just go to YouTube website - you'll get their mobile version - and add to Home Screen, and you'll get a nice youtube app icon on your springboard that doesn't disappear.

    Obv. need VPN for both.
