Meh. I don't want a free case. Ultimately, I've seen some seriously cheap and effective fixes that don't impact the size and shape of the device (which I really like). The one I went with was clear nail polish covering the area around the bottom left so that my finger cannot bridge between the contacts. That stops it from happening.

this is not an iphone 4 specific problem. i have tested it with a 2G and a 3Gs with same effects. see the 2g below:

On the 3G and 3GS, you can duplicate this by death-gripping the bottom right of the phone, instead of the bottom left.
