getting the new iphone

so am i understanding this correctly (from what i just read on modmyi re at&t pricing plans)...i can go into an att store and buy a 32g for $700 use it for a month on the cheapest plan and then cancel and keep the phone...as long as i'm willing to pay close to 800 for it? being a t-mobile jailbroken 3gs person, i assume then this would be the easiest course, unless of course, i'm able to also use or get a credit from another phone applied at radio shack. also i guess we need to figure out a way to cut down our sims as well

You need to investigate this closely before purchase.

AT&T offered an outright purchase (still carrier locked to AT&T but no plan) - then they took it away. I believe that it has been reintroduced - not 100% sure.

Otherwise, AT&T has nearly doubled their smartphone early termination fee - that makes it not economical to use that path to buy an iPhone.

When I bought my iphone 2g in an apple store for 199$ (I think) I didn't have to buy a AT&T plan for it, I just waited for 2 months or so until it was possible to unlock it.

Will it be possible to do this for the iPhone 4?

well, would there be an early termination fee if there's no contract in the first place? at a price of $699...it seems the termination price is already built in. plus they get a one month fee of whatever the cheapest monthly rate is. so $700 plus tax plus $100 maybe or less for the month would seem to place the phone at about $800 to $900...

still, we (t-mobile and others) still have the micro sim issue. when i called t-mobile cust service, they (at least in the near future) had no plans to make a micro sim option...

what are you talking about. In Jobs iPhone 4 demo I saw 32G iPhone 4 is offered for $299 as I remember?

AT&T definitely offer outright purchase options for the iPhone 4. I would still go for an officially unlocked iPhone (from outside USA) - maybe France or UK as they both are launching at the same time as the USA this time around. You lose the warranty (outside the country it was purchased in) that is the only negative side I can see.

Normal SIM cards can be cut down to microSIM sizes. I am surprised no-one has come out with a cheap kit to cut SIM cards to precisely the right size (and bunding in an adapter so you can continue to use the SIM in normal sized phones). Some company could make a killing with this.

hey olethros, can you buy an unlocked phone from the apple store in the uk or france or do you have to find someone there to buy one for you from another source?

last year someone found a momentary "hole" in the us apple store that allowed people (me) to put the phone in the cart listed as another item but still pay full price but get the iphone shipped direct from apple...
