Apple can't fix antenn issue goes after Jailbreak

For most this is a sad day for iPhone 4 users. Apple has publicly stated that it cannot fix the flawed antenna on the iPhone 4. The software patch due out next week will only fix the way the bars represent this signal. The other hot topic that apple insiders has spoken about is that the delay in the patch is a direct result of a fix that Apple is more concerned with in regards to the exploit used in jail breaking the iPhone 4. It seem that Apple has turned its back on solving a most serious flaw in the design of their beloved iPhone and instead go after the users. I Apple has really gone to far with this one and one can only assume that they intend to brush this problem under the carpet. It was also reveled that the tethering feature in the iPhone 4 was purposely disabled by Apple just days before the units were shipped causing those who paid for the data service with AT&T to be screwed once again. Currently in the US there has been good percentage of users returning their devices because it does not do as advertised. Apple has finally waved the restocking fee that it originally imposed on its unhappy customers. Apple has no further plans to fix any antenna related issues after this update except to incorporate any new changes in its future iPhone should they consider developing one. Chances are it will not be as a success as the iphone 4 was its biggest failure.

Shame.

I'm about to buy an iPhone 4 as well. Is it really *that* annoying that you can't use your phone properly anymore when you're right handed? I mean make phone calls and make use of 3G?

I don't think its really that bad. I just got mine thursday. I did notice some signal changes when I had the phone with no case, but no dropped calls. I just went and bought a case, haven't had any signal changes since I put it in. I'm also a lefty, so I was really concerned myself before I bought it, but im happy with my purchase.

This is my second iphone 4 with the same exact problem. What frustrates me is how charismatic Apple is about the whole thing. What worse is that Apple even went as far as to disable the tethering feature in the iphone. I am so glad I didn't change my data plan. I have seen the beta version of the new firmware 4.1 and yes there is indeed less bars to start out with but there is one thing I can say in fairness to it all an that is in some areas around the country here in the US some beta tests are seeing positive results. I can say this with some reservation and that is this fix is geographically dependent of what systems are in range and the frequency being used. I wish I knew more on how it works.

Beta firmware 4.1? You work at Apple or what?

Am I the only person who remembers that when the 3G came out, people were complaining that it had poor reception? Right next to a 3G blackberry, the iPhone 3G had half the reception. Flash forward 3 weeks to 3.0.1 and the signal meters were at full bars and the problem was 'resolved'.

I get the distinct feeling that all Apple did then was just arbitrarily raise the displayed signal level for lower s/n ratios. Then, what used to be 3 bars shows up as 5 bars. Now, flash forward 2 years to the iPhone 4 launch -- Apple screws the pooch on the antenna, and when people investigate, they find out that the method Apple is using to determine signal strength is complete and total BS. In true Apple form, they turn around and are 'stunned' to find out that the method they use to determine signal strength is 'completely wrong'.

This sounds like a bunch of bullcrap to me. They had an immature 3G radio in the first 3G that receive as well as competing phones, so they changed the signal meter to show artificially higher bars. They release the 4 that is very susceptible to signal loss, and then people realize that the bars are artificially higher, and Apple comes out and says they're about to fix it.

This just reeks of stock Apple crap.

I have an iphone4 and I encountered the signal issue that many others have encountered. I can produce this problem at will. I am right handed but I tend to grab & palm the phone so many times the antenna shorted out if i'm touching the black band at the lower left hand corner. I do believe this is a hardware design issue and cannot be fixed or faked by a firmware update.

With that said, one person who had a different problem with his iphone4. He took it to Apple store and they swapped it with a new one. On the new one, he said that it looks a little different and it looks like there is some sort of coating in that area. He is no longer having the signal issue and he believes that apple is keeping silent on this coating. Without actually seeing one, I'm just passing the info along. If anyone recently has a swap, please check this.
