If you did an 'Erase all content and settings', than this is expected behavior. After erasing, you must restore the firmware. If you have an SHSH on file for 4.0/4.0.1/4.0.2 you can restore those firmwares with the help of the SHSH file and TinyUmbrella. If you do not, you can only restore to 4.1 -- but a stock restore of 4.1 without using TinyUmbrella to block the baseband update will lock your phone (if it is not factory unlocked) and you will not be able to unlock until the dev-team release ultrasn0w for the baseband included in that revision.

In either case, the phone will require a restore to work if you completed an erase, this is behavior by design -- erase all content and settings also erases the installed iOS revision.

Re-read what he said, it is pretty clear.

If you chose "erase all content and settings"
You no longer have 4.0.2 installed on your iPhone. This is how "erase all content and settings" works, it erases everything - including the operating system.

If you don't have a 4.0.2 SHSH saved (on Cydia or locally) then you can NEVER restore to 4.0.2 again. If SHSH is a new term to you, go and look it up, every iPhone user should backup their SHSH if they want any control over what they can run on their phone.

Do you rely on unlock (ultrasn0w) to use this phone on another carrier to that which it was originally sold on contract to.

You need to take extra precautions if you do rely on ultrasn0w. Or if you think you might want to sell your iPhone in the future - keep in mind you get a better price for an iPhone that can be unlocked and used on all carriers.

This extra precaution is TinyUmbrella - which has a feature called TSS Server - read up on it if you have never heard about this.
