Default Knowing how someone does the unlock

If I was to get my hands on an unlock iphone when there wasn't a public release for an unlock is there a way to find out how the people did it? For example, before comex came out with his spirit jailbreak and unlock for 3.1.3, I knew someone selling unlock 3GS iphones at 3.1.3. These were brand new with matching serials so I know they weren't refurbished. They also had the new bootrom. This group of guys always seem to have an unlock when nobody publicly has it and way before any release. It isn't the hardware unlock method either. Is there anyone here that can actually find out how they did it by taking a look at one of their phones?

Could be that they were selling officially unlocked iPhones? They don't require any jailbreak.

No, it's an AT&T iphone. I checked the box. I even checked the warranty and always had 10 months to a year. Always had the protective film and almost all the time when I plugged to itunes the phone was connected to itunes for the first time. Plus, officially unlocked 3GS iphones would not be in the $500 range.

I have an idea of how this might be done - did you check the model number on the box or what the iPhone reported as the model number?

I checked the serial number on the box and on the phone to make sure it matched so it wasn't a refurbished iphone. I know it couldn't be a hardware unlock because that requires opening up the phone. The protective film was still on the phone exactly like it would be if you bought it brand new at an apple store. If the protective film was removed at anytime then I can easily tell. Also I know the phones were brand new because there were times when I checked the warranty and it showed it having almost a full year. If warranty was extended by applecare then it would show that. This cellphone store had a jailbreak and unlock at 3.1.3 months before comex made his release. They also had the jailbreak/unlock way before geohot released his blackra1n. I would like to ask you Olethros. Next time a new firmware comes out with baseband upgrade and there is no jailbreak/unlock, will you be able to know how they did the unlock if I bought one of their phones? I am assuming there are people in this world that can do the unlock better then the devteam and geohot. Just these people don't feel the need to let the public know about it and they profit from this knowledge.

I asked specifically about the model number - not serial number.
Does the protective film cover the dock connector port? I don't recall if it does.

I never looked at the model number. The protective film flaps over the dock connector port but you can easily peel it back to charge the phone without removing the film on the front or back. So can you tell me how you think they might be doing this?

I have an idea on how they could be doing this... I am not going to explain it.
