Thanks for the hint. I installed SBSettings and toggeled ultrasn0w off. Result: Little or no change in battery drain and I still notice the transmit and receive values increasing while the phone is idling. When I turn off "Cellular Data" the excessive battery drain slows. So it appears Hakim's hypothesis is correct.

Yes, I activated using iTunes. I wasn't aware there was any other way to do it and why not, I use AT&T's sim when I'm in the USA.

So now that it appears that SAM is irrelevant in my case, what to do? All this leaves me longing for 4.0.1 where I got about a day's worth of battery under "normal" use. I have all my SHSH blobs back to 4.0 saved both locally and on Cydia. When I did the "upgrade" to 4.1, my BB increased to 5.13.04. Is 4.0.1 supported under 5.13.04? So in the absence of a workable solution at 4.1, I might just return 4.0.1. I don't see any compelling reason to use 4.1 at this time. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks,
    John

I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. I have 55 or so apps, some of which use push notification. I also have email push updates set to manual but there is no change in settings from 4.0.1 (other than everything got reset when I selected "new" activation") and I haven't added any new apps since the upgrade. There is clearly something using the processor because the battery is warm, the usage keeps increasing. When I turn off "Cellular Data", battery drain slows and usage doesn't increase (obviously). This is clearly a 4.1 "upgrade" issue. I'm not sure what to do next.

Don't confuse push mail with push notifications from apps.

I was talking about push notifications - if you have apps installed that support push notifications (and push has been enabled/is working) then push is probably not your problem.

The console (which can be viewed in the free iPhone Enterprise Configuration tool) or a syslog (there is a syslog toggle for sbsettings) can give some clues to what is causing your battery problem.

Last night I built a new 4.1 ipsw using PWNAGE on Mac. Kept BB 1.59.00

Activated via iTunes. Set up as new phone.

Installed all cydia updates, ultrasnow and sbsettings. Ultrasnow is off now

    Battery life is still horrible

I also checked data usage and it keeps ticking up 134 kb sent and 102 k received in 5 minutes since reset stats

I have the bay app that does push. Turned off notifications and the data usage is still climbing.

So maybe this is not the answer. In my case, the battery drained completely in about 3 hrs. I connected it to the charger and when the 3GS (old bootrom, BB 5.13.04) came back to life it lost its activation (no carrier showing). I have decided that 4.1 is not worth the extreme time an effort to diagnose and fix this problem. With a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, I'm accustomed to understanding fully how a system works before modifying it, particularly when the consequences are high. My lack of understanding is clearly getting me into trouble. Over years, I've developed the ability to hack my Macs at a fairly high level but the iPhone is baffling and with no tech support available for hacking the iPhone, I want to return to 4.0.1 for the time being. Clearly, the problems unclemiltie and I have been experiencing are iOS 4.1 related. I rely on the iPhone too much not to have it work properly. SO:

I have my SHSH blobs back to 4.0 (including 4.0.1) and the ipsw's I've created along the way using Pwnagetool. Are the steps to return to 4.0.1 of my now unactivated phone thus:
    - put the phone in DFU mode
    - open iTunes (currently 9.2.1)
    - option+Restore
    - Select the previously saved ipsw associated with 4.0.1
    - sync with iTunes.
If I do this, can I use a previously stored configuration to bring back my apps settings or do I need to set it up as a new phone? I'm unsure about the process here.
    Thanks (in frustration)
    John

Just for yucks I decided to remove my exchange email since that is one of the push apps on my phone. Battery life IS MUCH better now and the background data transfer has slowed to a trickle.

Any chance that the exchange server has gone nuts and is flooding the phone with requests? The reason I ask is that the phone was working fine, went crazy on battery life a while ago, then went back to normal for no reason, then has done it again.

FYI, I don't use an exchange server. I use pop servers for email.

for mail, i believe there are 3 modes: push, fetch, manual. Try using the manual mode.
