Jailbroken with PWNAGE tool on Mac
activated via itunes with my ATT SIM
set up as new phone and not from backup

as an update, unplugged the phone from the charger this morning at 6:20am Pacific. It had charged all night and was at 100%. It's now 9:25 and the battery is at 55% and I received one 10 minute phone call.

I installed iStat last night and it tells me that the processor load is 0.01,0.06,0.07.

the list of processes running is:

    kernel_task, launchd, mDNSRRespon..,notifyd,syslogd,configd,SpringBoard, CommCenter,SCHelper,lockdownd,locationd,fairplay.N 90,mediaserverd,lsd,imagent,dataaccessd,MobileMusi cPl...,iapd,MobilePhone,MobileMail,iStat,securityd

(the ones above with the ... are truncated by iStat)

    securityd comes and goes

any suggestions of where else to look? I'm really not interested in doing a restore and re-setup of this thing again but will do it if necessary. (and I guess I can upgrade to 4.1 while I'm at it. Is there an untethered JB for 4.2.1 on the iphone 4 yet??)

Hmm, that seems a bit strange, maybe try hard reseting the iPhone and runing the jailbreak again?

    I have the same configuration:
Just did the upgrade from 4.0.1 to 4.1 using Pwnage tool
activated via itunes 10.0.1 with my ATT SIM
set up as new phone and not from backup

Battery life was fine at jailbroken 4.0.1, (would idle for 2 days) now it drains 65% in about 5 hrs idling (no use). Now I'm trying to figure out what is wrong and longing for 4.0.1

Having now read the entire thread, unclemiltie's situation sounds EXACTLY like mine: 3GS, old boot rom 5.13.04 (after upgrade to 4.1).

I first jailbroke it with jailbreakme.com at iOS 3.12. It worked fine. Then did the upgrade to 4.0.1 using pwnage tool and ultrasn0w because I too travel internationally and use prepaid simms. Battery life at 4.0.1 was "normal". I just did the upgrade to 4.1 jailbroke using pwnagetool 4.0.1 and unlocked with ultrasn0w. Installed the apps as a new install not a Restore. Now the battery drains to near zero in about 8 hrs.

WTF is going on?! Would returning to 4.0.1 help. I don't necessarily need 4.1?

    POSTED BY SHERIF HASHIM

good day fellow jailbreakers & unlockers

i hope those of u with 3g/3gs are enjoying their updated unlocked devices, all props to @MuscleNerd & co. for making this possible , hopefully the iphone 4 on 2.10.04 and 3.10.01 follows within a good time table.

on a very important side note, before anyone starts to complain about battery drainage issues after installing the new ultrasn0w on the 6.15.00 updated BB, the culprit here is not ultrasn0w, it's the hacktivation process (activating the phone by pwnage tool or redsn0w rather than using an official carrier sim to do so) that u mostly did while jailbreaking.

The 4.1 and 4.2.1 ipsws unlike their old ancestors, seem to keep looking for valid push certificates all the time, either thru your wifi, or thru your cellular data network (which u only have after installing ultrasn0w and hence u accuse it) , this can be seen clearly if u have a cellular working data plan for 3g or edge and u watched the settings > general > usage > cellular network data (sent & received are continuously increasing even without using any internet traffics on the phone) , this will also render the phone going hot even in stand by mode and also very rapid battery drainage occurs plus consuming ur data if you were not on an unlimited plan.

so to resolve this, u either:
    A) try to activate the phone using the official sim if u have it (even if the sim itself is old and not working) , or borrow it from a friend if it's possible, by any means, try to have an access to one and use it
    B) if A is not feasible, u can install SBsettings from featured cydia packages and turn wifi and data off when u r not using it (shuts down both 3g and edge) , till C is done
    C) (there is a very nice module being worked on by a trusted jailbreak app dev, namely @sbingner , which ll resolve that issue for those having it, the details of which shouldn't be disclosed until he finishes his awesome work, till then, either use A or B to resolve the issue if it exists for you ) ##UPDATE##: this is already finished and working
    see update#6 on Dev-Team Blog - Ultra-recycle & Subscriber Artificial Module

sorry for the long post and thanks for your attention

Thanks Mr Hashim but I have (and have always had) my AT&T SIM installed when jailbreaking and unlocking my 3GS (BB 5.13.04; Pwnagetool/ultrasn0w no Hacktivation as far as I know) and my battery drains extremely quickly. I would sorely like to remedy this situation even it means returning to 4.0.1

Having read most of these posts, I'm coming to the conclusion: I cannot use the iClarified tutorial (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=13089). When I try to add http://repo.bigner.com I get the following error message: "Did not Find Repository The indicated repository could not be found. This could be because you are trying to add a legacy installer repository ...."

Mr Hakim's analysis has merit in my case (see above). I can literally watch the battery percentage drop when the phone is idling (the battery is warm). Turning off WiFi, 3G, and Cellular Data slows the drain plus I see the send & receive data values increase so what he says about the push certificates makes sense.

I have the following shsh blobs saved: 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 4.1 So what if I re-Jailbreak with pwnagetool and NOT unlock. I don't need the unlock until I travel abroad, which I won't do until the spring? Since this mis-behavior appears to be related to unlocking, if I stay at 4.1 and Jailbreak but NOT unlock, will this solve the problem until the @sbinger solution comes online? I'm even willing to return to 4.0.1 (NOT 4.0.2) if necessary. In that case can I restore to my previously saved configuration at 4.0.1?

There is an ultrasn0w toggle SBSettings toggle. You can turn ultrasn0w off when you aren't using it.

It's been clearly communicated that you don't need to have ultrasn0w running when you are using your official SIM.

However, you problem may be due to the way that you have activated.

When you use pwnagetool, do you say yes to the question "can you activate your phone via iTunes?" (in advanced mode, this means the activation checkbox is off)

If you do this and let your iPhone activate via iTunes - then you have absolutely no need for SAM.

I did the SAM thing today and no luck. But I was activated with iTunes previously.

In the past I did turn off e ultrasn0w unlock and that didn't help either.

Looks like I'm in for a restore and re-jailbreak. I can and will activate with the AT&T sim and let you know what happens. I will need unlock sooner as I am going to china in January.

By the way in the past when I installed activated with pwnage I had to install ultrasn0w to get a signal at all even with the AT&T sim

If that is the case, then you have done something wrong with activation. Or the phone is locked to another carrier than AT&T

    My apologies

Thanks for the hint. I installed SBSettings and toggeled ultrasn0w off. Result: Little or no change in battery drain and I still notice the transmit and receive values increasing while the phone is idling. When I turn off "Cellular Data" the excessive battery drain slows. So it appears Hakim's hypothesis is correct.
However, you problem may be due to the way that you have activated.

When you use pwnagetool, do you say yes to the question "can you activate your phone via iTunes?" (in advanced mode, this means the activation checkbox is off)
Yes, I activated using iTunes. I wasn't aware there was any other way to do it and why not, I use AT&T's sim when I'm in the USA.
If you do this and let your iPhone activate via iTunes - then you have absolutely no need for SAM.
So now that it appears that SAM is irrelevant in my case, what to do? All this leaves me longing for 4.0.1 where I got about a day's worth of battery under "normal" use. I have all my SHSH blobs back to 4.0 saved both locally and on Cydia. When I did the "upgrade" to 4.1, my BB increased to 5.13.04. Is 4.0.1 supported under 5.13.04? So in the absence of a workable solution at 4.1, I might just return 4.0.1. I don't see any compelling reason to use 4.1 at this time. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks,
    John
