Yes, you can use redsn0w, it won't touch your baseband. The only thing you can do that will actually update your baseband and ruin your unlock is update your iPhone to a original firmware (Either thru Restore or Update).
Redsn0w will not do aything with your iPhone 4 baseband, don't worry. If you ever want to upgrade the software, use PwnageTool or Tiny Umbrella and you will be safe.

What firmware are you on though? If you are still back on 4.0-4.0.2 then redsnow is not what you want to use to jailbreak.

Redsnow will be fine to use then. Just make sure you dont update to 4.3.2 or 4.3.3 as doing that will update your baseband.

Redsn0w is a fine and solid jailbreak, it's the most versatile of the jailbreak tools. The correct version to use is 0.9.6 release candidate 8

However against 4.2.1 - this will give you a tethered jailbreak.

You can then run greenpois0n RC6.1 to transform your jailbreak into an untethered jailbreak.

Finally, one thing that confuses many people. A lot of redsn0w (and greenpois0n) guides start off with a step where you restore the iPhone in iTunes. If you are trying to save your baseband - this "restore" step should be skipped.

^Excellent advice, although if staying on 4.2.1 you may as well just use greenpoison rc6.1 one time to jailbreak instead of going through the whole process of redsnow then greenpoison. Unless of course you need to hactivate in which case you will need redsnow to do that step for you since greenpoison doesnt hactivate.

I think x98car's answer is quite clear on this point (as is my previous comment about redsn0w earlier in this thread). Please read and try to UNDERSTAND existing posts before asking questions that have actually been answered earlier in the same thread.
