i can't imagine apple would put out a piece of hardware for 6 months even just to bring in 2 new carriers. would you agree this would mean no iphone 5 until the earliest summer/fall 2012?

Apple sees the platform as software driven rather than hardware driven. There will be major new software features (iOS 5) this June/July.

Any new hardware this year will feature only minor revisions (similar to the difference between the iPhone 3G and 3GS).

It's too early to say when the next major revision of the iPhone hardware will occur, but most likely it will be in the period you mention (summer-autumn 2012).
