Default iphone 4 restore - help needed!

    Hi everyone,

I'm in need of some help with restoring a iphone 4 - it's been updated via itunes i believe to the latest FW 5.0.1 - but stuck in recovery mode - I've tried TinyUmbrella to kick it out of recovery mode but with no luck.

I've been told that the device was jailbroken prior to me doing a restore to stock FW in itunes to 5.0.1 - so i tried restoring with a custom FW and it returned a error 3194 - I've played around with the Hosts file but with no luck.

Can anyone shred some light/help on this issue i'm having.

Below is the log from itunes for when i do a stock restore in itunes:

Doing a search through the forum would have netted you hundreds of responses to the same question. Please search first, in the future -- you'll get faster results than waiting for one of the mods to answer the same question we've answered hundreds of times before.

Short answer: You are trying to restore a version of iOS that you do not have an SHSH recorded for. This will not work and there is no way (except for using an SHSH) to make it work. Use TinyUmbrella to see if you are lucky enough to have stored any SHSH with saurik's server through Cydia. If you do NOT have an SHSH, you can only restore iOS 5.0.1 now.

If you don't know what an SHSH is, click on the SHSH link in my signature and read up. They will be important for you to know about and understand if you intend to restore any iOS revision 4.x in the future.

I appreciate your response & do apologise for not searching prior to askin the question.

Anyways, i've used redsnow & selected the original ios5 firmware - then put the device into DFU & did a 'jailbreak' - its all gone through OK and device is back up & running. But, however, my device has now got no wifi options & the network carier continues to searching-

i've checked under settings in the device: i've noticed the following are blank:

modem firmware, bluetooth and wifi address

Any suggestions? as to what I can do to get these back?

No worries, we have to tell people to search pretty much in every reply we give, so, not too big a deal.

It's not a good sign if your modem firmware, bluetooth, and wifi are blank -- this can be caused by a mis-flashed baseband. Since the only baseband that Apple is currently signing for the iPhone 4 is the 5.0.1 baseband, your only real option at this point would be to attempt to restore 5.0.1 and allow it to flash the baseband. This will threaten your ability to unlock, as no unlock has been located for the current baseband, but it's also probably one of the few ways that you can get the phone working again. Unfortunately, the baseband on the iPhone 4 requires an SHSH like iOS does, except unlike iOS, it bases the SHSH on a random number, generated at every boot -- this means that it's not possible to bypass the SHSH requirement for basebands, and since your baseband needs to be flashed to restore functionality, you will need to flash it with the latest version...

I hope you don't need an unlock, this would be pretty bad news if you did. Past that, there is the possibility that after you restore the device the baseband upgrade will still fail -- at which point your only option would be to have the device repaired by Apple.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news -- cross your fingers and hope that a clean restore to 5.0.1 re-flashes your baseband properly. Once that's done, you can still use redsn0w to jailbreak (tethered or semi-tethered at present), so...

I don't rely on a unlock - i've done as you say to restore to 5.0.1, below are the step's I performed:

Opened TU, under Advanced i've unticked the box where it says 'set hosts to cydia on exit'
    Restarted the comp
    Placed device in DFU mode
opened itunes & pressed the restore button
restore completed fine went into recovery mode
I kicked it out off recovery using redsnow
    deviced booted up fine

But the only problem is I can't get pass the activation screen (it says connect to itunes)

itunes doesn't do anything - once it detects the device and says insert valid sim card, even though a valid (original) sim is in there, but device is still on the 'connect to itunes' doesn't go any further.

    Any taughts?

Are you restoring custom firmware? Just curious why you are doing it in DFU and needing to kick it out of recovery afterwards? You shouldn't need to do that unless you're blocking the baseband update -- which may be what can fix the phone.

No - i'm using the original firmware via itunes (restore). I shall try it without the DFU as per to your response.

    thanks again for your response.

I've tried the restore via itunes without DFU mode - but it made no difference what so ever, its still stuck in activation (connect to itunes) - and after couple of mins itunes returns a message saying 'there is no sim card installed in the iphone that you are attempting to activate' even though the correct network carier sim is inserted.

    I've almost given up...

I hate to say it but with the way it sounds, your only option may be to take the phone in to have Apple look at it. The behavior is aligned with behavior you'd expect to see if the baseband had been improperly flashed or bricked. With any luck they'll send you on your way with a refurbished phone, but it will likely have iOS 5.0+ on it...
