Cool iPhone 4 questions! sshing... stuff

Im expecting my iPhone 4 to be arriving here today!! im just sitting on my doorstep waiting for UPS...

anyway! I used to use winscp to ssh my old 3g iphone, but it was picky about which wifi would work and which wouldnt. so i started using ifunbox instead!

so now im wondering if i can use ifunbox, to ssh STUFF into my iphone 4... since im impatient with the next jb..

im running ios4.0 on my 3G and have some apps i really like, and i want to try to ssh those apps into my new iphone 4. I'm just wondering if it would work!

thanks for your help! im just trying to learn stuff...

Jailbreaking on iPhone 4 is not available just yet buddy.
There is no such thing as a mistake, there is what you do, and what you don't do.

You can use iFunBox to copy any user accessible data (music, apps, some of the database files) over to the new device. People have had success copying from 3.1.2 to 4.0 and then rebooting the phone.

That said, you won't have root filesystem / afc2 access so you can't access anything outside of Apple's little sandbox....

    Red face ok

thanks n1ck, where would i be moving the apps from?

sbsettings and winterboard (in /applications) are probably outside of that lame sandbox huh?

but the regular apps (the sandbox safe ones), would i be moving just the weird number-and-letter-serial-looking named folders from /user/applications on my 3G (running ios 4.0) to the same location on my new 4? would that work? or are there other folders i need to copy and move also for the apps to run properly?

    thanks again!

Nope. I was incorrect in my previous post when I mentioned apps -- apps are under /private/var/mobile/applications (which you don't have access to without afc2) and you can likely only get to /var/mobile and below without a jailbroken phone. That said, even if you could get to that directory, without a jailbreak, jailbroken apps won't run -- it's not just a question of getting them over to the phone, it's that the OS won't run unsigned, non-apple approved apps.

Not 100% sure about how it works copying apps between phones, I've never really done it -- iTunes manages that if you sync with iTunes so I've not had a reason to attempt it manually. Most I've ever done is migrated SMS and Call History databases to a new phone without restoring a backup, so my experience ends right about where we are now.

    Default ok, yeah

thanks n1ck!! i really appreciate it, youve helped me out more than once!

i dunno why i totally spaced on itunes transfer... haha, just got into the habit of doing everything over itunes head!

i guess ill just have to wait patiently like everyone else for the iphone 4 jb. i noticed you have your 4 running 4.0 and not 4.0.1. is there a reason for that? i JUST got my phone yesterday, and it came already running 4.0.1. from what ive read, there really arent any big differences (besides the size of the att signal bars) what do you know about the upcoming jb? i think ive read somewhere that it will work on both 4.0 and 4.0.1... i hope so!

...correct me if im wrong n1ck...

As always, I refrain from updating until the dev-team releases tools that make it 110% safe for me to do so. Since 4.0.1 included a baseband upgrade as well (even though it's been strongly rumored that the unlock will work for the 4.0.1 baseband as well, I have nothing substantial to back that up), I just left it alone. I don't really care about the size of the signal bars nor that Apple finally stopped blatantly lying about signal reception on the device, neither of those things really impact me too much, so I'm fine at 4.0 until I hear otherwise from the dev-team.

With regard to the jailbreak, I'm pretty certain that 4.0.1 will be jailbroken with the release of the 4.0 jailbreak -- there are really only minute differences between the two -- but officially, the word is not to upgrade (as always), and to make sure you have the SHSH's on file for 4.0 and 4.0.1 to ensure future ability to downgrade.

The rumors are that Spirit2 will jailbreak 4.0 and 4.0.1, and that the new PwnageTool will support 4.0 and 4.0.1 as well -- but those really are just rumors. Until the software is released or a formal announcement is made about their support, I'll hang back on 4.0

    Default ut oh...

well, since i JUST got my iphone 4, it came with the 4.0.1, and since it never had cydia or jb or anything i couldnt backup any 4.0 SHSH for it... so does that mean im stuck where i am pretty much?

and i assume youre running your iphone 4 with att right? after i bought it (2 days ago) the guy plugged it in and 'activated' it, but told me it should take 24 hours for the att carrier to recognize and accept my new sim... and until then it has 'no service' in the status bar.

well now its been almost 48 hours and im still waiting, i have connected it into my laptop w itunes and i have my apps and contacts and everything, so now im just waiting for att to recognize me... im just wondering what your experience was in this limbo period.

Yup, since your phone came out after they stopped signing 4.0, there wasn't really any possible way for you to have obtained the SHSH, but as most of the jailbreaks *should* jailbreak 4.0.1, it shouldn't be an issue.

My phone activated pretty quickly, but my co-worker's phone required a call to AT&T to activate even though the online activation said it was successful. A quick call to 611 from another AT&T phone and they had it activated in just a few minutes.
