You are going to have to restore it. I have published instructions on how to fix this for older devices running iOS 3.x but 4.0 added an extra layer of transparent encryption that has not been publicly broken. This prevents fixing such problems.

I found an iPhone 4 in a store, handed it in and after two months it wasn't claimed so I was given it. After purchasing a charger i found out it is password protected and I obviously have no access to the original computer it is synced to. Is there any way that I can restore it to factory settings for my own use? I have no idea what version of iOS is installed on the phone and I have access to a pc and mac to do it. I'm not very clued up on this sort of thing at all so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

This question isn't really related to the thread you are posting in. Short answer: yes. Long answer: procedure depends on whether you want try and preserve the signatures embedded in the older iOS version that is currently on the phone (this would allow untethered jailbreak and maybe unlock via ultrasn0w).

Start a new thread if you want help with preserving the SHSH blobs that are currently on the phone. Otherwise Force the device into DFU http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/54082.htm and restore to iOS 4.3.5 via iTunes (remember, with this approach no unlock is possible and phone could be IMEI blacklisted)
