have an iphone 4 officially unlocked
Hello everybody,
i have an iphone that is from canda and officially unlocked. i just want to get understand well about jailbreaking the iphone. when you jailbreak the iphone you did that to download free apps right? and can i do that with the officially unlocked device or is there any way i can download cydia or installer without jailbreak.
and i heard that it opens some ports for the iphone if jailbreak the iphone and it easy from hackers to get to my iphone.

It is not as much "free" apps but apps that apple won't allow on the store. For example, one of my favorite apps is MyWi that turns the phone into an access point so I can use my laptop or iPad on the ATT network.

Installer.app is no longer supported or developed, the only package manager that is actively developed now is Cydia.
There is NO WAY to get Cydia to installed or to work without a jailbreak. The jailbreak disables some of the kernel security restrictions that are required for Cydia to work.

Thread has pretty much answered everything but just to add my 2c:
1) Jailbreaking has nothing to do with free apps, as unclemiltie said. There are apps in Cydia that utilize functionality that Apple does not allow developers who publish in the App Store. Good examples are MyWi as he mentioned, SBSettings (a persistent and accessible from anywhere on the phone quick settings manager / process killer / etc.), Winterboard (a skinning / theming / customization utility), Infinidock / Infinifolder (allows you to break the 12 app folder limit and allows you to have a scrolling dock), etc.
2) Cydia does require a jailbreak, it's not possible to install or run it without being jailbroken. Beyond that, *all* jailbreak apps require the phone to be jailbroken, so even if there was a way to get Cydia on the device without jailbreaking, you'd still need to jailbreak to make anything else work.
3) Jailbreaking inherently does NOT provide any additional risk to your iPhone, however, some of the most commonly installed packages do. OpenSSH is a secure server that most people run to be able to access their iPhone. This allows users to remotely connect and access a terminal prompt that gives a lot of control over the device. The security risk is that by default, the two users on the iphone (root and mobile) have the same password of 'alpine'. There are many tutorials online and instructions available that explain how to change this root password from the default. The only security risk is if you install OpenSSH and do not change the password, AND leave OpenSSH running all the time. What I do (and I'd argue most users should do if they don't already) is immediately change both passwords and then add the SBSettings SSH Toggle so I can quickly and easily toggle the SSH server. That way I only have it running when I need it.
If you've got any more questions, please let us know.
Thanks!
