according to geohot's blog... he has successfully jailbroken his iphone 4 but there is no word on a release and he's not planning to release it because of comex coming out with a userland jailbreak .... what do you guys think of this? I think it's absurd that geohot is doing this just because hes in a battle with the dev team or comex.... why cant they all work together?

Listen from what I read online geohotz didn't jailbreak the iPhone 4 and it's a picture he took from another iPhone that was in cydia. He is a fake and I believe the real deal are the dev team. I will make a donation to them for their hard work. You guys rock Dev Team

Geohot has exploits that can jailbreak iPad and iPhone 4. Chronicdev has had the same exploits for ages. Devteam also I believe.

The first 4.0 series jb will be from comex - a userland jb like spirit

what difference does it make wether Geohot jailbreak the ip4 or not ............as it is he is not gonna release the jailbreak ..........so what's the use it is as good as no-jailbreak !!!!

Keeping the few truly low level jailbreaks private allows more Spirit style userland jailbreaks to be safely developed for future iOS versions.

So.. geohot and chronic are keeping their aces up their sleeve. A smart move when you are the mouse.

It is a misconception to feel that you are entitled to new jailbreak and unlocks for each new iOS version or HW.

Your right and I agree with you but Geohotz has an ego issue. I can truly say we can't demand an unlock or anything because its free and we aren't the ones working for it.

olethros, userland jailbreak is just designed for that one specific firmware correct? It's like one like blackra1n or pwnagetool that will allow you to save your baseband for custom os?

you mentioned chronicdev have a jailbreak for ages, but how could they when the ipad and iphone 4 just released? Also they have not brought anything to the scene since they advertise about greenp0ison :\ Wonder if you have any informations on them

Chronicdev team have made and released a lot of tools that help the community of hackers working on jailbreaks. Updated tools to decrypt new firmware, new tools to restore and activate your iPhone (bypassing iTunes completely). Greenpoison has morphed into a rapid development toolkit for turning an exploit into a jailbreak.

Chronicdev has another iBoot exploit - has had it for a long time. This exploit appears to still exist in iOS 4.0. This is the one of the aces that geohot also has. With the introduction of SHSH and personalized IPSW an iBoot exploit is valid for life only if the device has a SHSH for an iOS version which can be exploited. This is why everyone advises you backup your unique SHSH for each iOS version.

So to say that chronicdev is not contributing is incorrect. They are just contributing at a different (more technical) level.

As for geohot, yes his ego is his undoing. I think he might be starting to realize this.

Userland jb in the style of spirit are more tied to a specific iTunes version than a specific iOS version. Spirit actually worked with iOS 3.1.2, 3.1.3 and 3.2. It Was iTunes 9.2 that blocked Spirit's jb install exploit.

Oh i c thank you for the clarification. So it was itunes that make it hard to use spirit but in order to have 4.0 you need itunes 9.2 instead of the older versions? Has anyone figured out what part in itunes determined what signatures the firmware needs in order to restore or upgrade? If someone can do that then they could mod itunes to do regardless of what iOS released Unless it still signs with the apple server, but then can you bypass that with saurik's for the shsh blob that you have saved?

This is part of the work that members of the iPhone dev team and chronic dev have been doing to make a tool that can restore and activate the iPhone without using iTunes at all. Some of the restrictions are in iTunes (UDID beta check) and some are in the iPhone (SHSH)

Also back to the actual topic. Seems geohot has quit the iPhone scene. I kind of expected this kind of thing might happen - as per my previous reply.
