A solution is coming, it requires more than a patch. The problem is definitely related to international SMS which is required to activate facetime.

I know it will come sooner or later, but as a person who anticipated the unlock to use the iPhone 4 on T-mobile only to realize that one of the main features doesn't work because of some screwed up .plist or configuration file somewhere designed specifically for AT&T and the way it intercepts sms's or whatever--- is very upsetting and disheartening. And then having the lack of 3G continuously flung this direction is even more of a slap in the face. Remember, FACETIME directly from apple is for WIFI ONLY.... So CARRIER and its data speed should be IRRELEVANT to get this feature to work. What should matter is calling another iPhone 4 user... PERIOD.
I'm not really understanding your point. Most people who jailbreak their phone also install the free apps that allow you to do "WiFi restricted" things on 3G or EDGE. Secondarily, considering the amount of people who jailbreak and unlock, go to T-Mobile, and post that they don't get service (because they didn't turn 3G off), I'd say it's pretty important information that T-Mobile doesn't provide 3G data service to iPhones in the US.

I'm sorry you're using a phone that doesn't support the radio band that your carrier uses (your choice, remember), but your attitude about it seems to blame the people posting information here for that disconnect -- it's not our fault you chose to do that, and it seems kind of unnecessary to post something so vehement and pointed about an informative post that was made. I apologize for reminding you of something that is apparently quite an open wound on your end, it wasn't my intention to salt it -- but the information still stands and is factual and correct, irrespective of whether or not it reminds you of something you're not pleased about.

    But I digress....

You don't understand my point? What?

So now this has become a jailbreak app discussion... The fact of jailbreaking, installing my3g or 3g unrestrictor or facebreak - has nothing to do with this conversation whatsoever.

Here's my POINT - so YOU can understand: FaceTime is a feature of the iPhone 4. Apple intended this feature to be used over Wifi network. Now, let's move ahead just a bit - I have an iPhone 4 (several actually), and the original post was an attempt to figure out why the FaceTime feature was not enabled or available on my ultrasn0w unlocked iphone 4's on t-mobile. Why would this feature from Apple, which has nothing to do with the carrier at all, not be activated or enabled because it's being used on T-mobile USA? I never mentioned data plan, data speed, or using any jailbreaking / cydia apps to unrestrict the wifi only feature apple introduced on the iPhone 4, YOU DID.

But the statement was made "T-Mobile only has EDGE for the iPhone, so if you're not on WiFi, it's going to be abysmal from a speed perspective." and I know that, even though it's 100% completely irrelevant to the original post and question. I'm not trying to use FaceTime on edge - I want to use facetime on wifi - the way it was INTENDED to be used... This took a ugly turn for no reason, and got off topic. The thread is trying to establish WHY Facetime doesn't work/activate on T-mobile USA. Not about the performance of FaceTime using Edge on T-mobile USA if you can even get it activated. Now: This thread got off topic, and if it was my fault - I'm sorry. Let's try and nudge this thing back on track for the sake of the community.

UPDATE: I have successfully activated FaceTime on T-mobile USA... I have duplicated my success on 3 other iPhone 4's all using T-mobile USA. HOWEVER: I can not duplicate my success on at least 2 other iPhone 4's on T-mobile USA.

I added the +1 to my phone number in Settings->Phone area. Turned on FaceTime, and just waited for a while. Overnight and then presto - facetime was working... I have tested it with facetime call's between other iPhone 4 users on T-mobile USA and AT&T USA - All working fine (over wifi of course )

I do not know what the details of the activation are, so my opinions are simply that - OPINION. I'm guessing this has to do with T-mobile's end, and how international text messages are sent and received to and from the iPhone 4. There are charges involved with activating Facetime - Each international SMS is about $0.20 cents, I've read online people having accumulated $30-$100 in international SMS charges... My advice, turn on the option and wait... Don't keep flipping the switch, just wait and see.. Within 24 hours mine activated. YMMV.

    LOL.

In the future, I'll make sure any responses to you are assassin targeted responses, and let you figure everything else out yourself. Sorry to have ruined your day with my post. Thanks for the sarcasm, it's apparent you definitely know more about these things than I do.

Thanks for trying to get the post back on topic. Glad to hear you got your problem worked out. Hope you enjoy Facetime on T-Mobile.

The guy behind pushfix.info has worked out how facetime activation works, why it is more difficult to activate on t-mobile US. He is developing a service to activate this reliably. Normally I would be against any service which costs $$. The philosophy is to share the info for free. In this case, to make the activation reliable incurs real costs (setting up a SMS gateway) rather than just web hosting.

Don't enable facetime just yet if you are on t-mobile, wait for the solution from pushfix. T-mobile is no longer playing so nice with the international SMS charges, you risk not getting them waived.

Wow man... Can we say big EGO? And I'm the one with sarcasm? AAAAAALRIGHTY THEN. I never claimed to know more about anything - I even explained that saying it was simply my opinion.

I'm glad to see the thread back on ACTIVATION topic, and not performance topic.

I agree, I remember when pushfix was pimping out his unique certificates for push, which later came to be a free solution via cydia.

Because I don't know how/why the facetime activation works - I'm sure his solution (whenever its released) should work - and I'm glad for that, I just hope that the root of the issue can be established and found and a simple file solution be made. Or something via cydia.

The only thing that confuses me about FaceTime is: When I initiate a facetime call to a number that has facetime working, it continues to ring... but if I try to call someone who does NOT have facetime authorized - the call almost immediately quits, like my phone somehow KNOWS that number does not support facetime. The call will quit within a 3 seconds saying something like "so-and-so does not support facetime"

Yes I know the history - I played a small part in helping develop the scripts to make the free solution work.

Pushfix is fair and open about why he charges for some of his fixes. His time is not free. I respect that.

This will NEVER be available as purely a cydia package - there is a SMS component as well, that can't be duplicated via a Cydia package.

It was an open discussion in the forum.
We voiced our opinions but we respected his explanation.

While I appreciate PushFix explaining his position and his time not being free and everything - I disagree with charging for a solution, instead of posting the knowledge and allowing others to come together as a community and resolve the problem free. EVERYONE who contributes to jailbreaking, unlocking, etc - all their time is involved - and their time is not free either, yet no one else charges... BUT THIS IS SPINNING OFF INTO A WHOLE OTHER TOPIC

I would much rather someone explain in detail the FaceTime activation process, and allow us to send up our own SMS gateway's or whatever, and get the activation solution up free.

AND I'M STILL NOT 100% SURE I UNDERSTAND WHY THE ACTIVATION WORKS SOMETIMES AND NOT OTHERS - FOR SOME PEOPLE AND NOT OTHERS. DOES IT IN FACT HAVE TO DO WITH T-MOBILE OR APPLE????
