Do you plan to buy a case to protect the iPhone 4 if you have the iPhone 4 in hand?

Not sure. I've been pretty specific with my iPhones so far, my 3G ended up with a screen protector and a DLO rubberized case, and my 3GS ended up with a full body invisible shield and a DLO rubberize case -- but in the 2 years I've had an iPhone, I've never dropped mine, scratched it, banged it up, etc. I'm contemplating leaving this one as-is and seeing how it goes, as the screen protectors definitely change how the device 'feels' when you're touching, and the rubberized DLO cases add so much to the heft and thickness that the device seems thoroughly less sleek.

I'll probably play it by ear for a few days and see. I know the DLO case I have now won't transition to the new device due to dimensional differences and changes in placement of things, so I may just withhold purchase of a replacement if I use it for a few days and don't feel it will need the case.

I have used used cases for all my iPhones, as well except the 2G. I usually keep my iPhone in my upper shirt pocket and I have a fear of it sliding out into the sink or toilet. I used a rubberized Speck case.

And as n1ckn4m3 said, it does add quite a bit of bulk to the sleek design.

Not a big fan of cases, why would you hide the beauty of the phone? But in this case it's necessary because of the design flaw, which really sucks

So, I changed my tune. Last week, my iPhone took a dive from my pocket and landed flat on a hardwood floor. I was sitting down at the time so the maximum drop was 2 feet. It landed flat on its back -- so imagine my surprise when I picked it up to note that the front of the screen had cracked in 3 distinct places. *GRR*. The phone itself is pristine, since it landed flat there was absolutely no marring to the case or to the side of the body, and the cracks themselves are microfractures that don't extend the length of the panel and don't reach the edges.

That said, I got in touch with Apple and complained and they're sending an advanced replacement, but who knows what kind of uphill battle I'm going to have when they get it back.

So, I bought a silicone case and one of the full-body invisible shield protectors for this one, and I recommend anyone else do the same -- if a 2 foot flat fall onto the back cracks the front screen, this phone is useless without a case to protect it.

I'm always dubious of hard-shelled cases, as the principles of physics would tell us that a case that deforms (i.e., a rubber case) vs. a case that is rigid would provide better shock absorption. E.g., the rubber or silicone would absorb a percentage of the shock applied to the device vs. a hard case which would just transfer the shock that would occur.

That said, $80 for a case that doesn't even cover the entire back of the phone is seven levels beyond ridiculous, as far as I'm concerned -- no matter how 'cool' it looks.

I kept my case from Vajacases.com for my old 2G iphone which fits perfectly on the iPhone 4. By the way the dock for the 2G iphone also works perfectly with the iphone 4
