Default Buying new factory unlocked iPhone 4

Ok, I have been considering buying a new iPhone 4, and I was considering about getting one that would be factory unlocked(living in US). I have heard that this could be done by buying from foreign Apple Store(i.e. online Hong Kong Apple Store). Few questions about this:

    1. Can someone confirm for sure that this works?

    2. Assuming that this works, would said iPhone then be locked once I plug into iTunes and is activated and/or upgraded?

    3. Will said iPhone be the same as if bought in US(i.e. in English, etc.), or if not, could it be configured so after the box is opened?

    4. Will said iPhone work the same as a US bought iPhone for jailbreaks?

Do you mean confirm that these "commitment free" phones (as Apple likes to refer to them) are 100% unlocked? Yep they are

If you meant - can you buy them direct from apple's hong kong (or canada) online store? As far as I know you need to use a credit card with a billing address within that country and a delivery address also within same country. So you can't order with USA credit card and ship direct to USA address.

Each time you restore/upgrade it via iTunes - apple sends an unlock/activation token to the phone - no matter what carrier/country gsm sim card you use.

Some country specific things are configured during the first boot after restore. These appear to be triggered by model number (the model number is normally the same for all phones from a particular country or region)

These items are usually easily reconfigured (language for example).

Some defaults are harder to remove.

This is mostly apparent with phones from mainland china ( not from hong kong) - there is a thread about how to hack the chinese model so it doesn't default to using google.cn for example

So, to clarify, such an iPhone will never become locked to one carrier? That question is closer to what I was trying to get at in my original post.

It should not - if purchased directly from Apple and not purchased with a contract/commitment to a specific carrier.

There are examples where a carrier has offered the iPhone, unlocked but with a specific plan/contract. In this case, the carrier is probably within their rights under the terms of the contract to carrier lock those who have defaulted on their plans. This is what China unicom is currently threatening to do. they have not clearly communicated about how they plan to do this yet.

More commonly in Europe especially, people who default on their expensive contracts get IMEI blacklisted.

Bottom line, buy direct "commitment free" from Apple (not apple in USA though) and pay full price US$900+ and you will be fine.

Just to inform you, Apple Hong Kong has no stock of iPhone 4. The website shows "Currently Unavailable", they wont even give a waiting time!

As far as I know, the best places to buy factory unlocked iPhone 4 are - Canada and Singapore. You can buy from Australia too, though it is a bit expensive. In Bangkok and Malaysia too, it is out of stock.

About the unlock, it is permanent. You cant lock it even if you want to!

However, just as Olethros has said, make sure that you buy directly from Apple so that you dont get scammed.

ok, thanks! I thought there were other foreign apple stores that did the same thing, but for some reason, the only one that I could actually remember was hong kong. But ok, thanks!

ok, so apparently, I cannot buy from any of the foreign apple stores and ship to the US. Is this correct? Olethros said earlier in this thread about hong kong apple store being that way, I tried the singapore and canada stores myself to confirm, and they will not ship to US. If there is one where I can get factory-unlocked iPhone and ship to US, I would like to know. However, if not, I just checked, and there are two Apple Stores(physical store locations), and that is only about 4 hours or so away from me. I guess to do this then, I would have to drive there, as I do not have any way to ship within hong kong, singapore, Australia, any of those other places, or as far as I know, within Canada.

Physical apple stores in the USA don't sell factory unlocked iPhones. AT&T won't let Apple do this in the US.

Unless these stores you talk about being 4 hours drive away are actually in Canada, you might as well save yourself the trip.

The stores I am talking about are in Toronto, Ontario...what I wish I could do is order from one of these foreign online Apple Stores and ship to US. That would save me the four hour drive.

I like driving AND I like the iPhone 4! If I were in a situation like you, I would have made the drive long back!

However, there are other ways. You can use a mail forwarding company to do that. You order from these foreign online Apple Stores and then they ship to a local address given to you by the mail forwarding company. The company then ships it to you, with some charges of course. One such service in Singapore is International maildrop / mail drop (mail forwarding/redirection) service from Singapore.

This would save you the four hour drive, but would take at least 2-3 weeks.

But then, I believe it would be easier to just drive to Canada. Maybe you could call those Apple Store locations to check if they have stock and then plan a day off for the drive.
