I think you make the non hacker mistake of confusing android (the UI/built-in apps) with Linux base OS.

The hard part is porting the base Linux level to a new type of hardware - for example to the A4 based devices - including iPhone 4.

Correct -- at present they do not have a low-level bootloader exploit for the 3GS or iPhone 4 that will allow the installation of OpeniBoot, which is the first step that must be completed before any of the Android derivatives will have any chance of running on the device. As they've been looking at the 3GS for a long time, the odds are slim that it will happen unless they find something new, the avenues they've been down haven't led them to a workable exploit for modifying that bootloader to execute other code.

I hope they find something soon though, because Android is slow as sludge on the iPhone 3G.

At the moment they can only manage a tethered boot on the A4 chips, this will allow them to start developing driver support (in the hope that a decent way to install openiboot is found). The 3GS is closer, just the hardest part the NAND FTL remains.
